Default 2000 s type jaguar

Hi everyone. I need help. Had a sensor signal for faulty gear box. Took to o'reillys and they said OBDs indicated leaky tranny seal. Took to specialist in Lake county, fl and he said tranny was totaled, suspension was shot, need brakes (just had front brakes out on), Total repairs totaled $10,000. Then he tried to get me to buy a bmw he had on his property. Took to 3 other garages as my Jaguar guy does not work on transmission. Based on the Lake county infprmation, he said the car was not worth fixing. Took to fourth garage and head mechanic said it needed new transmission ... $10,000. Then he wanted to buy it for $150. Car was int two years ago. My mechanic strongly suggested I buy it from one of his customers as it was spotless, ran great and was well taken care of. A week later I drove it and transmission was not acting up at all and in fact never did skip or kick. The battery went dead shortly after. I replaced the battery and the new one went dead. Did this again. So, I guess there is an electrical problem that is draining the battery and may have cased the sensor problem. Or i have a bad sensor????? Any input?

.

On the 2000 S type 4.0L the transmission is a FORD MOTOR CO. 5R55N model. You are being smoked on tranny cost but most transmission shops don't fix anything, just replace and can't diagnose either. Good luck finding a better source.

Welcome to the forum. If the message returns, please be sure to get the 5 digit code, such as P0745. Most code readers have inaccurate definitions for Jaguar. With the actual code, we can help you narrow down the fault per Jaguar's official code definitions.

Holy cow! I hate to bad talk a mechanic, but that figure it almost 3x the normal replacement cost. The early S-types have a 5R55N transmission, which is variant of a VERY common Ford transmission. On my '02 V6, I finally wore out the transmission after approximately 360K miles. One transmission shop told me they don't work on European vehicles, most others were booked for months, but I found one local shop that took good care of me. I forget the exact bill, but the total was around $3600 installed for a reman unit. $10K is way out of line.

Make sure your alternator is properly charging the battery. Charge the battery first, preferably with an automatic charger with at least a 10 amp output. After that, connect a voltmeter to the battery terminals. You should typically see 12.6v or higher before start. Start the engine and run at idle. You should see a charging voltage of approximately 13.7v.
