2000 S-type Sunroof
The sunroof does not close fully. Specifically, the sunroof moves forward but the back of the sunroof does not raise up to complete the close. As a result, I have about 1/2 inch gap between the sunroof and roof type that lets in air and (more importantly) rain. The dealer wants $1500 to repair. Can anyone tell me how to get the sunroof completely close?

Open it up in increments. Look for detrius. Remove as found. Move it back and forth looking for any odd noise indicating foreign matter. Once open, you may need to lube the sliders with some graphite or just plain old bearing grease.
I say open int all the way, clean the sliders and rails as much as possible then lube the crap out of it. See if it closes. No luck? then don't bother with a dealer, take it to a sunroof installer. They will know sunroofs WAY better than the dealer who will just order one and replace it with ZERO diagnosis. I'm more the the fix the motor, adjust the X, replace only the X camp. Where dealers replace entire units.
My Merkur when "newer" was like this. Wastegate dead? Replace ENTIRE turbo. Wastegate is 3 bolts and $100. Turbo is $1500 and 6 hours labour. Driveshaft donut chunked? $35 donut from BMW or Fiat dealer (jobber too. Ford? Replace ENITE driveshaft at $1200.
Only go to a delaer for extreme diagnostics. At worst, tow from dealer to garage for better labour rate and hand your trusted mechanic the diagnosis. Only if we the abused customer shows the dealer we are in control will our life as a Jaguar owner be easier. Never, EVER pay for or green light a swap out of a component that does not GUARANTEE a fix. Having an $800 (or worse) bill and a still non-fixed car is totally unacceptable.

RE: 2000 S-type Sunroof
to all who responded, thanks for you help.
with the help of my (mechanic) neighbor, I inspected the track and the plastic "sliders" are broken such that 1) the sunroof is being opened/closed by one side and 2) the upward movement cannot occur. No doubt I will have to replace the track assembly as I have not found any source for purchasing the sliders. The good news is that based on my inspection, other than time and having to remove the headliner, etc, the job does not appear to complicated.
