2000 S Type V8
Looking a another Jaguar. In reading there were three versions of the S type V8, first two various issue. Third version seems to have corrected many of the problems particularly the timing chain issues. Can anyone tell me when in 2000 they went to the version lll engine, not supercharged. Thank you in advance.

The 4.0 litre engine (AJ28) had plastic secondary timing chain tensioners that can fail and cause the exhaust camshafts to jump timing. The issue was resolved in mid-2001. There are two ways to tell: remove one or both camshaft covers and inspect the tensioners, or obtain the engine number to see if the engine in the vehicle has the uprated tensioners from the factory.
The engine number on the 4.0 litre units is stamped on the top front of the block casting between the cylinder heads. Use the search function for this forum as this has been covered several times over the years.
