2001 3.0 5R55N transmission advice
I am looking at a 'mechanics special' 2001 fixer upper 2001 3.0 auto for the cost of scrap. I need something to work on for fun... (170k miles)
Engine runs and body is OK inside and out but when I put into D or R, there is an 'engagement' thump, but no drive in any forward gear or reverse. There is a slight whining with engine speed.
I have not yet been able to check fluid or DTC, but is there ANY thought that this could be resurrected with fluid and filters, cable adjustment?
1. I presume gbox is toast and that it would require a remove and rebuild.
2. I would plan to do this at home, and am pretty good mechanically and maintain my XJR, and XJS but have not yet done an auto rebuild, but have done manuals.
3. Can the box come out from below with the car on jack stands in my garage? I do not have a lift or hoist or pit.
My reading on the 5r55n is that the housing wears and springs break and solenoids leak.
Appreciate any thoughts.
I saw a DIY on removal but all the images seem to be missing now.

With that many miles I would suspect it has case bore wear. So do NOT rebuild your unit. Get a completely remanufactured transmission from a big outfit with a warrenty.
Yes it can be removed from underneath.
If you are a really good mechanic there are kits to sleeve the case bores but I really think you would be money and time ahead to use a pro for the tranny.
