Hey there everyone...
I have been reading the forum for years and just decided to join now that I have had a break down and about to make some rather large decisions... Just want to run my scenario by you all to see if I am on the right track here...
So first I need to say that I am in a situation where I need to fix the car rather than scrapping and getting a replacement... So having said this heres the situation...
Broke down on the highway last week, the transmission wasn't coming out of 4th gear and ran too hot for too long and seized the engine... So have to replace both asap...
I cut a deal with the shop where he is going to do the labor for FREE in exchange for making a website for his shops which I think is a pretty good deal...
So I am wondering if it is really a big deal to make sure the VIN matches the engine I am ordering? The 8th letter in my VIN is N and the Engine I am looking at is C... I found an N engine but it costs a lot more and trying to get this done on a budget here...
Is it ok to use this engine? on OEM Recycled, New Aftermarket, & Reman Parts - Cars, Trucks, and HD part 300-83030A
OR should I stick with the engine with matching VIN and pay a lot more? I just need to know if I can use either one or if theres a big reason why not?
Next.. the transmission...
This is a total newbie question and I assume the answer is NO but I must ask because there is significant savings if its a YES...
Can I use the 4.0 transmission for a 3.0 engine?
If the answers NO then can any 3.0 transmission work with any 3.0 engine? or does the transmission also have to match the VIN?
Thank you for helping me!

You cannot mix and match transmissions. One is built for the torque curves for the V8, the other for the V6.
I would never recommend a used transmission. Rebuild the one that you have and maybe a used engine. Before you install the engine, I would do a teardown and inspect everything due to the age of the unit.
Replace all seals including head gaskets and valve seals.

You can find a 2001/2002 3.0 engine/trans from a salvage car and install the whole thing.
I think a 2000MY would work but I don't remember if there are any differences in the early powertrains.
The 2001/2002 cars are the same electronically. When the 2002 electrical guide was issued we just got a single cover page that had 2001/2002 written on it to replace the 2001 cover. The 2000MY has a few minor differences but the powertrains might be the same.
Most good salvage yards can tell you about MY compatibility because that is what they do.
A good used engine/trans is going to be the cheapest way to get back on the road. It's a 'roll-of-the-dice' as to whether or not you get a good working part but most 'wrecking-yards' offer a warranty for a period of time (30 days??? 90 days???)
You need to stay with the 3.0 and the 5R55N FORD gearbox for compatibility.
The later cars have a ZF gearbox and a CAN bus that will NOT work for you.

Thanks For The Advice!
Now I am getting closer and gaining confidence to make my purchase.
Just one final question.
So now I know that I can only use v6 transmission for v6 engine that is what I expected to hear.
Do you know approx price to rebuild the v6 transmission? its good that I had it towed to a transmission shop, they should fix it up for cheap.
I am getting labor for free for making them a website for their 3 shops. So that definitely helps!
So should I really get the head gasket replaced and the seals? I mean is it pretty cheap to do that? I don't have a whole lot to spend right now that's my problem here. The engine I will get comes with a 12 month warranty which is good, most of the ones I see out there are 6 months max.

Thanks for your help...
So I am 1 step closer...
Now I plan to get the Engine + Gasket/Seals pack (extra $150 or so)
Also plan to get Transmission Rebuild Kit, seals+cylinder etc ($150 more)
The last thing I need to find out is WHICH Engine to get....
I prefer to get the cheaper option but need advice to know if its OK to use this Engine or if it will cause problems???
So there are 2 engines that I can find for 2001 Jaguar S-type 3.0
They are all the same only difference is the VIN letter my VIN is letter N for the 8th character.
The engines I find are VIN = C or VIN = N
Does it REALLY matter that I get the VIN N or should I be OK with the VIN = C?
This is a difference of $200 so I really want to get the VIN C as long as its OK to use this one.
Here is a list of engines that I am choosing from:
