2001 S-Type 3.0 Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement
I believe that I need to replace my Camshaft Position Sensor Bank "A". I have seen some diagrams and pictures but am still having trouble figuring out where this little devil is. I saw some pictures of the location, but they were of a 2004 and the motor is different. Do I have to remove the intake manifold to get to it?
Found the sensor at the rear of the drivers side head. Pulled and replaced with a new one. Cranked, idled well for about 15 seconds and then started running erratic again. Now in addition to codes P0340 and 0342 I am now getting Code P0320. Something going on with Distributor System. AAARRRGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! Getting frustrated. Replaced Battery, have good charge, voltmeter shows alternator charging at the battery when I check it. May have to get it towed if I cannot get this one figured out. Might go purchase new connector to be able to rule that out. Possibility of a bad Camshaft Position Sensor that I purchased. I hate electrical issues.

Here, let me fix that for you:

Since you hail from South Carolina, I must assume (Danger! Danger!) you have a US spec LHD model, with the driver on the left side of the vehicle. A fault on Bank 1 refers to the US passenger's (or UK driver's) side. It would seem you have changed the sensor on the wrong side:

If you have a fault code for your distributor, that's a first on an S-Type, considering it has a coil-on-plug ignition system. Going out on a limb here, but I'm guessing you're following the definitions given by your scanner or code reader. Many generic code definitions are not accurate for Jaguar. Use this official document for code definitions:
Your original P0340 points to the a problem with the camshaft CMP sensor on bank 1, but unfortunately you replaced the same sensor on bank 2. Reinstall the original in bank 2 (US driver's side) and install the new sensor on bank 1. See if that clears up P0340.
I'm not sure what to suggest for P0342, as that is not shown in the guide. Concentrate on P0340 first, as we do have a good definition for that one, and go from there.
The new P0320? That refers to the crankshaft (CKP) sensor. When it fails, the engine won't run. My hunch is this new code has something to do with the new sensor being installed on the wrong side AND being bad from stock, and now both CMP inputs are bad. The computer couldn't figure out why, and so flagged P0320 as it mistakenly thought the camshafts and crankshaft were in disagreement. Just a hunch, so don't rush out and buy more parts yet. Fix the known the fault first, the bank 1 CMP sensor, and see what happens.
Yes, thank you. I should have remembered that from when I replaced the coils/plugs on the driver's side. I went out his morning to feel around on the passenger's side. I am thinking that I may have to remove the intake to get to it? I will look at the cabin filter area to see if that stuff is easily removed. I ordered a shop manual earlier last week but they have not sent me the PDF yet. If I have to remove the intake I might as well look at new coils and plugs also. i hope there is an easier way, but thank you for responding and helping me get back on the right track.
To reach the back of Bank 1 (Bank A), the upper inlet manifold must be removed.
Since the upper manifold is being removed, replace the IMT o-rings on both units, and replace the breather hose below the lower inlet manifold as it's a common failure point causing misfires then P0171 and P0174 being also present.
If they haven't been replaced, it's a good idea to also replace the spark plugs, coil units, cam cover gasket and spark plug boss gasket on Bank 1 whilst the inlet manifold is removed.
Once again, thank you all. I have finally gotten underway. I figured out that I need to go acquire a 3/4" 8mm socket to remove the intake. My 1/4" driver was OK for the rest of the 8mm, but I would destroy it removing the manifold. The only torque wrench I have when I put it back on is 3/8 anyway. I will look at the Cam Cover Gasket and see how easy that is to replace. Thanks for all of the suggestions. i just hope that I get all of the hoses, lines and connections made correctly when I put it back!
