Default 2001 S-type 3.0 transmission slipping.

My 2001 jaguar S type 3.0 has 183,000+ miles. Was a very reliable good running nice ride. The car ran strong with no issues other than the occasional #2 cyl misfire which only happened when the car sat for a few days with out running. I put about 60-70 miles per day on the car usually and the car has never broke down. I loaned the car to my dad to drive home he lives about 200 miles away and I have drive the car for much farther distances before. The car was running fine with no issues and about 150 miles into the trip while he's stopped at a red light, he goes to take off and the car won't move. He said the dash flashed something about a transmission fault and they pushed the car to a nearby parking lot. Some people trying to help him scanned the car and cleared the code so now I have no idea what the actual code was. I went to get my car with a trailer and before loading it up I cranked it and tried to move it. You can feel the transmission engage and the car will try to move briefly then slips. Once I got the car home I checked the fluid by removing the center of the drain plug and fluid came out so I assumed it was not low on fluid. Next into a clean drain pan I drained the rest of the fluid which still appeared mostly red and did not smell burnt.

Any help figuring this out will be greatly appreciated. Will a fluid and filter change possibly fix this or maybe the solenoid pack? The car has never had any issues with slipping or harsh shifts or anything indicating that the trans was going out. This was all sudden with no warning! Please help, thanks.

Well the fluid is pretty bad looking and the filter looks black. Can you cut the filter open and take a look? Maybe post a picture.

Has the transmission ever had any service? It would be cheap to try a fluid/filter change but I don't think that will fix your problem.

With high miles and little or no maintenance I would suspect case bore wear. I think you best bet is to get a rebuilt transmission. I would NOT fix yours. Just too many miles. Replace the TC too.

The fluid and filter didn't change a thing as suspected, is it possible the solenoid pack is bad?
