Oh dear, that old can of worms again. How long has the ATF fluid been in there? If way beyond 50,000mile, it needs a full flush and new genuine full synthetic ATF. Rare in UK, many garages have full-flush machines in US. Failure to do proper fluid changes at appropriate mileages will ruin your transmission which will COST in an eyewatering, bank-balance bending way. There's a lot about this subjecton here, just do a search.

Had a similar problem 12 months back. After having it thoroughly checked that the problem was in 1st and 2nd only, they checked the gearbox under stress and it was clearly shot in those two gears.
A full rebuild came to nearly $AU5000 - about $US4000 at the time. However 12 months on and it's running perfectly.
The only option at the time was to pick a fairly new box up from a write-off at the wrecker's yard - you might save 50% on the gearbox cost, but nothing on the labor, and the cost is mostly labor.
Good luck - I hope it's as simple as a fluid flush and replace.
