So I have a general question (which might become specific depending on the answer )

I have a 2001 S-type with the 4.0, and I notice that it doesn't have a bellypan (particularly the one that everyone talks about that must be removed during oil changes).

I've heard it both ways: that the early S-types didn't have the undertray, and that the early S-types did have the undertray!

So my question is two-fold: first, did the S-type have the undertray in 2001?

If so, where can I get one (or does anyone on the forum have one?) I've checked jagbits.com and they told me that they don't have the undertrays for any year (even the new ones). carpart.com doesn't seem to recognize the search (maybe I just need new search criteria?)

Anyway, any help is appreciated

They didn't have undertray. I have had my '01 since new and it never had one.

 

Mine's a '99 & it's got one.

 

While our 2005 S-Type has an undertray (much needed to protect those low-hanging parts like the compressor), I was surprised to learn that our recently-acquired 2006 XK8 convertible does not come from the factory with an undertray. The XK8 rides even lower to the ground than the S-Type does. Puzzling that Jaguar would roll this car off the factory floor without one....

 

Just got through changing the oil on my 2003 S-type. The belly pan is a complete PITA, but I would never go without one. I like the fact that the engine bay stays largely clean on a car with 89k miles.

 

My UK 3.0Se 1999 model certainly has one.

 

I had two 2000's S-type 4.0's and they both had lower engine covers/bellypans. They were a PIA to remove for oil changes and I always kept a very keen eye to ensure that all the screws were back in place at any establishment I used to take it (including the dealer). First time I drove the car on the highway with less than the full compliment of screws was the first and last time I heard the very annoying flapping and droning noises from underneath.

 

My 2001 S Type 4.0 has one.

 

Hmm.. So, the consensus is they did come with it. Good...

@pilotmanitalia: If your web reference was for carpart.com literally, they will not have that part. They are one of many aftermarket service part websites.

Use Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market , they are a used car parts search site that will connect you with salvage yards.

Here is how I use them for obscure parts like you are looking for. Search for a random part, say, a hood or transmission for your car. Get the list sorted by the ones closest to you geographically. Call the salvage yards that come up and ask them directly if they have it. The bad part, is if they part the cars themselves the undertray was probably torn apart to get at the engine and trans...

Good luck in your hunt. And like others have said.. Get it.. Does a great job of both protecting things and keeping them clean.

 

My two "sleeve-nut" fasteners securing the belly pan center area were lost during an oil change. Anyone know a part number/source for these? My 2003 S-type has a total of 5 10mm machine screws and 2 Phillips screws, and 2 "sleeve-nut" fasteners.

Mine are just nuts, 10mm size same as the bolts. Any hardware shop has good enough nuts

 

+1 mine are nuts two I think the originals had flanges on them.

Thanks. I should have said "flanged nuts", not "sleeve nuts". The 5 10mm machine screws (3 on the front, 2 on the rear of the pan) appear larger than these flanged nuts. The way the threaded studs are, looks like you need to prop-up the plastic belly pan the get the studs to protrude thru the pan and thread them on. What a pain to lose them during an oil change!

 

Yep, a pain. I do my own changes and yes you need the studs to protrude a bit to thread the nuts on (I prop the undershield up with my body as I'll be lying on the ground). I use a washer, too. I don't put the nuts on very tight and haven't lost one so far but have a jar of mixed nuts which probably has another the right size if I do. Someone lost the flanged ones before I got the car - this is the first I knew they were meant to have flanges!

 

Coventry West in the Atlanta area is a specialty Jaguar breaker. I would try them for a used undertray. Even if they don't have one in stock, they could save the next one that comes in. Good luck!

 

Just sharing based on my car on whether there was a belly pan in earlier S-type's - since this thread has been revived.


I have a 2002 S-type 3.0 (VIN M25643) that doesn't have a full belly pan. I can drain my oil without removing any pan/undertray.


I do have a radiator shield/undertray that covers the very front end of the car and is a real PITA to remove with a number of fasteners - had to remove it to take out my radiator fan and when I replaced the swaybar bushings - took longer to get the undertray out than the fan. The little screws were rusted good. I've had the car since 2003/4 don't think it ever came with any other belly pan.

 

I purchased my 2000 S 3.0 new in Aug 99, currently has 36000 miles - obviously a garage queen. I have read (I believe) every post relative to bellypans.

My VIN is L12308.

I don't believe my S ever had a bellypan - doesn't now and I see no evidence of one ever being attached. Unfortunately, until recently I relied on dealer service and I don't have any way of knowing if a pan was there and removed, or just never there.

Does anyone know conclusively whether early models before a certain VIN # didn't have them? And, do any of you have a 2000 S with a VIN # prior to mine that you know came with a pan?

I will greatly appreciate any info you can provide.

 

The original cars had a shorter undertray under the radiator area only so may not count Later cars also had a full engine undertray. I don't believe that the later pans will fit the earlier cars.

 

My assumption has always been that the belly pan is there to protect the transmission pan, which in the case of the ZF transmission, is plastic.

Did the Ford transmissions have a metal pan? If so, the belly pan might have not been included.

Are all bellypan shield the same? I see plenty for sale on the internet for the 2.7D but nothing else
