2001 S type bellypan/undertray?

I don’t know about you guys but I get frustrated when things don’t seem to have a logical explanation. The discussion about bellypans is one of those things for me.
I thought PAB raised a great question re: the transmission pan, i.e plastic v metal. Are the Ford pans metal and could that be the reason?
There doesn’t seem to be any other possible consistency such as:
UK v US
V6 v V8
I raised the question about VIN # earlier – could that be the key, i.e. before/after a certain VIN? My VIN is L12308 and my S type does not have a pan (I bought it new).
I guess this isn’t the most important issue in the world but it is a frustrating one for me and I am hoping that someone can shed some definitive light on it for those of us interested.
