Default 2001 V8 engine swap

I have to replace the engine due to rod knock and worn piston rings and I was wondering if I have to get the same year engine or can it be between 2000 and 2003? Also can I get the same engine from another car like the xtype?

Quick answer, yes and no. X-Type has a V6 so it wouldn't work. Lincoln LS used a version of the 4.0 engine but with many differences so it could be done but might be tough. 03+ 4.2 wouldn't work at all.

You may be in trouble, the 4.0 really wasn't very good and any used engines will bring all their problems with them. A rebuild will be $$$ and you'll end up with a "wasn't very good" engine afterwards.

Tough choice, don't envy you having to make it. Sorry...

Time to cut your losses and move on?

Aside from the easily corrected tensioners, why do people keep beating on the 4.0 engines?

That...

But really, that engine is now over 12 years old, was pretty obscure in its day, is complex, and would cost an arm and a leg to rebuild.

So, just try'n to level-set that fellow's expectations.

But seriously, would anybody recommend having any AJ engine rebuilt? Finding a low mileage replacement 4.2, sure. But a total rebuild... =:-0

Just like the 4.2 in the facelift cars...........

Our turn will come.

The early S-types are old enough and worn enough that almost any serious repair will quickly exceed the value of the car. Not sure that means they should all be scrapped for that single reason.

If the car is otherwise structurally and mechanically sound, why not give it a second life?

Absolutely, time does not stand still. Enjoy these cars as long as possible but don't expect them to become true classics, they won't last that long unless they are kept as a museum display.

And that is really too bad, in general. We look back on classic cars from the 50s, 60s, and 70s (to some extent), realizing that their technology was simple and that they can be kept running for'evah.

Don't think we'll see many S-Types and other 1970+ Jaguars (or other cars for that matter) at car shows in the future, sadly.

If a car is viewed as 'just transportation' then yes there will be very few S-types in the future, either pre- or post-facelift versions. It almost pains me when I see yet another post from someone new who has picked one up 'cheap' and expects to fix it and keep it running with little or no budget behind them.

Although these cars are very reliable and durable, when it all goes wrong the complexity of troubleshooting and availability/cost of replacement parts requires that the owner be devoted to the car at a level beyond 'just transportation'.

It is true that the cars of the 70s and earlier were far simpler- but I'm seeing in my old car hobby (Corvettes) that many of the skills required for maintaining carbs and distributors are becoming lost arts.

If you can DIY engine swap, then worth doing. And do changes like tensioners to the used 4.0 in the process.

Thanks for the info. Its a hard decision because the body is in good shape and the inside is pretty good too and I only paid 1200 for it. I could pull a engine for a LS from a junkyard close by for $250.

Just find a used AJ28 engine, install it and go on with your life.

I have several customers with WELL over 200,000 miles on the original AJ28 engines.

I have 2 XJ8s with AJ27 engines with over 100,000 miles each. If you keep OIL and Coolant in the car they can last a LOOOOOONG time.

These engines do NOT like overtemp AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
