Default 2002 S-Type 3.0 safe mode almost constantly

Greetings! The forums helped me through installing new fuel pump for my black cat, now several months later, I have almost daily safe mode warning and can’t figure out what to pursue. Doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason but when it’s in safe mode at a stop, the idle is so low that she stalls quite often. Recently investigated battery as cause (tested at 11.6 v off and 13.7v running). Any advise would be appreciated!

Start with charging the battery for at least five hours at 2 to 5 amps. Use a voltmeter to check the voltage after charging; it should be at least 12.6 volts. If not, replace the battery.

Insufficient voltage can cause random DTCs and instrument cluster warnings.

thanks! I’ve been reading about the battery causing this but it just seemed too simple to be true.....now if I can only find my charger!

Default Update on my black cat

Never could find my battery charger (may have got dumped during some garage cleaning), however, it does read 12.6 volts at auto shop. Just failed emissions test today with a p1584 (throttle body) and 2 separate codes for slow response bank sensors. Trying to determine if this cat has reached her 9th life with me or can this still be a battery or connection with TB or similar easy fix. She runs so well when not in safe mode that I just can’t believe she needs massive $$$ poured in! Can we save the Jag?

Step back from the ledge! Don’t jump!

I had the same P1584 code and safe mode with my ‘02 V6. A used throttle body from eBay took care of it. It was about $75 about 5 years ago. A quick search showed several available right now under $150. Piece of cake to change.

Make sure the unit includes the TPS. Some guys sell those separately, but it’s best to get them as a set.
