Before I take it to the dealer (scheduled appt - May 13), I hope to get some input from the knowledgeable members.
2002 3.0l - runs great on the highway, no power loss, no issues. Has a rough idle in gear and occasionally stalls. Startst back up with no problems. Is pulling a P0171, P0174 and P0420 code.
If i read correctly, the P0420 is a CAT code and shouldn't be causing these problems. The P0171 and P0174 codes can indicate a vaccuum leak. The power brake vaccuum line appears to have been replaced. I couldn't find any leaks but have read that there is an elbow under the manifold that tends to leak. Seems that this requires removal of the manifold to replace it.
Soooo.... does this seem the likely problem and would it cause the car to stall at idle? Is there anything else I should look at? Also does anyone know have a rough estimate of the cost to replace this?
Thanks ahead of time!

Allen,
If you're a DIYer it's a "cheap" fix. I'm not sure what the parts cost is, but it's not much really. I had this same issue about a year ago just after I bought mine(rough idle/stalling). I had the Jag dealer fix it as I didn't have the time to do it myself. I had them replace the elbow, intake gaskets and IMT o-rings, and some hose clamps on coolant hoses. Total cost for parts and labor, if I remember right, was right around $1600. I should have had the plugs done too, but didn't have the miles on it yet. Something to consider. This is a common issue with these cars. the dealer should be able to give you a rough estimate. Might be more, or less, depending on you locale.
Good luck.

Thanks guys/gals.
joycesjag - I have that diagram. Unfortunately it's not accurate to the early 2002 and previous models. The design seems to have changed. Still gives an idea of where things are though.
2000jaglvr - $1600??? ouch!!! That's more than I paid for my last car!
Jagv8 - Noted and thanks. Will edit my post to include the "P"
Wattie - Thanks for your reply. PLease let me know how your weekend fix works.
All - Is there any "step by steps" on removing the manifold? I've been fixing my own vehicles for the past 20 odd years but this is my first Jag. It doesn;t appear that it would be too difficult but I'm sure there are alot of things that need to be disconnected that I am unaware of.
Thanks again everyone!

I did the repair you are talking about. You can do it yourself. And save a lot of money. you will probably break one of the hoses going across the top of engine. I used a little t wing plastic feed to connect the three together at the top and can take a pic of it in place if you need it. Purchased at Home Depot.
I started a couple of threads when I was doing this and put up some pics. Hope they can help.

I also have this problem that worsens as the weather gets cooler, would the fix suggested be the same? My intake manifold gaskets are green, I've checked and replaced any poor condition vacuum parts (the elbow near the firewall), sprayed some cleaning fluid on the the MAF sensor. Sometimes I get the burning oil smell but it's inconsistent.
I've read a lot of the board I just want to make sure I'm going in the right direction. This car can be a money drain. No codes just yet, I've got a friend coming to plug me in sometime soon.
Thanks,

I found a vacuum leak on the rear elbow. To fix it I slipped some heat shrink tube down the vacuum hose until it covered the elbow. Applied the heat gun and sealed the elbow fine. The idling improved but still stalled. So I replaced the petrol filter and now the problem has gone completely. It appears the filter was so clogged that at idling there wasn't enough to keep the fuel going through. Has been fine for the last 2 weeks. I cut the filter open and it was like mud.
