2002 S-type 4.0 Dead Engine after 63K miles

12/22 - 50K service @ 57K miles
12/30 - valve cover gaskets changed due to small oil leak. Job says 'recheck for leaks no more leaks at this time'
9/3 - check engine light comes on and I hear a rattle associated with RPM @ 63K miles, take to Jaguar service
9/8 - Jaguar says the car is 4 quarts low on oil and the rod bearings are shot - only solution is new motor.
I contacted Jaguar customer service - they will do nothing. My service will do nothing... but what I don't get is the following:
1) Did they not refill my oil?
2) If they did, did they not see that my car was burning 4 quarts of oil - they see the car about every 6 months or so.
3) If there was no indication, what kind of product dies within 6000 miles?
Any way you look at this - something has gone awry. I have 3 other cars I treat exactly the same and I drive my Suburban much harder towing etc.
I followed all recommended service and yet here I am with my low mileage (63K), babied S-type with a dead engine.
Jaguar says $14,500 for a new engine. An independent is quoting me $6500 for a used motor with a 90 day warranty.
Under other circumstances I would choose one of these options, probably the $14,500 new motor. But the fact of the matter is, I have lost my confidence in the Jaguar brand and their service.
I'll most like start looking into other luxury brands - though I must say... Jaguar has taught me the difference between luxury and quality.
Any tech who would like to see my VIN - I'd be happy to send it.

keavdog, brother.
I hate to kick a man while he is down, but somewhere along the line somebody should have taught you to check your engine oil more frequently than 6 months or 6 K miles for gosh sakes.
You are probably right to get some Honda or something, but don't go around trashing your Jag if you are going to admit what really happened- it sort of makes you look stupid.
And you can probably get the engine rebuilt or replaced for way less than you quoted, but I wonder what you have done to the rest of the car and if it is worth it.
Just my $.02

If you put a used one in I would make sure it has the updated secondary timing tensioners in there and new valve cover gaskets, very cheap to do while the motor is out.
Sorry to hear, I am a mechanic and I have done this once when I bought a pampered 740il at 40k thank god that car has a oil level indicator that gave me a heads up or I would have burned it up before the first oil change due to a small leak in the oil cooler line that got nicked by something. Now every car gets checked every weekend regardless.
Good luck and don't give up on Jag as a brand just because of one tech or dealership they are not all the same.

As others have mentioned finding a used motor would be the most inexpensive way to go.
A quart of oil consumed every 1500 miles would be considered in the "normal" range for just about any engine from a Honda to a Ferrari. You got to check that oil every time you put gas in your car.
I've run service departments for a company that owned a couple dozen new car franchises including Jaguar, BMW and MBZ. You would have gotten the same response from any OEM under those circumstance. I hate to say this but in this instance it is not Jaguar's fault.

I already told him some of these things in another thread. Don't know what complaining about it again is going to do. You seem to have found the answer, so go with the used engine. I mean the engine you wasted is used, so installing a used engine would put you back to where you started. It is not a Jag issue, it is your issue. The warranty on those cars is 4 years/50,000 miles. So sometime in 06 or 07 depending when it was originally sold, it went out of warranty. So going on 3 years out of warranty, I don't blame Jag a bit for blowing you off. Who knows what's happened in the years it's been on the road while out of warranty.
You admitted to not checking your oil level, and if you admitted that to Jag, you are at fault in their eyes. Lack of maintenance.......and checking levels is part of maintenance. Send over your VIN in a private message if you don't want it posted here publically. I can run a check on it, if you'd like.
