I did not replace the coils, Joel was sent the incorrect ones, and did NOT want to purchase the $50.00 ea. Auto Zoners. In addition to the parts in post #1, I had to add valve cover gaskets and a serpentine belt.
By this morning I had no remaining fault codes and the restricted performance was gone. I ran the vehicle up to the Shell station and put in a full tank of premium $47.00, (Joel uses regular) drove a short distance and popped codes 1701 and 1704, o2 sensors. I called all the local parts stores and no one had them in stock, bummer.
So next week we will tackle the o2's, tranny, and also the vehicle is dire need of brakes and rotors!

I know what happened with the coils. The 03 is kind of a mystery in the parts word. In the US, ALL 2003 model year cars are post facelift cars. In the Rest of the world, there is an arbitrary switch based on vin. A lot of bulk ebay part sellers label things as 00-03, when in reality for the US market its 00-02. Just like those vacuum elbows you called me about.
Now, PM my your address I'll mail you one of my handheld scan tools. That way you can do live code reading / data logging. When ur done with it just mail it back.
This thread is gonna be epic when all the work / pics hit the net. (Including all the surprises you discovered along the way).

Rick, sounds like you have quite the job going on here. But, silly question. You mention codes 1701 and 1704, those are tranny codes but you are talking about having to mess with the O2 sensors. Would you happen to be meaning the P0171 and P0174 codes (lean conditions on banks 1 and 2)? Just trying to follow your logic here. In my PM, I talked about the tranny issues (for codes 1701 and 1704), but thinking about it, I'm thinking you meant something else. Let me know.

Chris and John you nailed it, I had smelled way to much MAF, brake cleaners this weekend they are the P0171 and P0174 codes. I will edit my post.
Anyhow I read this old thread https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ighlight=P0171 looking at thermos response #7. The o2 sensors are $140.00 ea. from what I have found so far and if the down streams don't really go bad maybe I should not replace them.

Hold on! Read the sensors! It's why they're in OBD-II. Live data is good.
Of course the downstream ones can go bad. You usually get poorer MPG if they do (because the PCM can't micro-adjust the fuelling) and slightly worse engine responsiveness (which might seem like any of many things, if noticed at all).

Where are you getting the sensors? I'm probably looking up something wrong but the O2 sensors at autozone are about $47.00 each. Also they appear to be the same sensors used on the Lincoln LS. I could be wrong it wouldn't be the first time (or second)!

Two questions, how close are you to Raleigh, and do you own a code scanner or interface with a PC that can do real time scanning?

I am going to ask the mods how they would like to have it set up.
The original post by the owner was something about purchasing a tranny,when the tranny was not the issue.
Then I created this one. But the truth of the matter is SOOOOOoooo much was done to his car in such a short manner, the mods may want it split up. I have tons of pics to go through as well with each procedure.

Joel had told me, that the tranny was replaced about 4 years ago, he did not give up the specifics. The oil was golden and looked and smelled (no taste testing here) like new.
Sort of topic: The output shaft seal known as the "transmission extension housing seal" was not leaking as Jaguar mentioned to Joel on the original inspection. <---Saving Joel ANOTHER $585.00!!

Since Joel has not updated I will. Joels vehicle has been gone through and I am happy to report that his car is now running code free!!!!
In the course of 20 wrenching hours, I have replaced the following:
Oil Pan Gasket
Upper and Lower Intake Manifold Gaskets
Valve Cover Gaskets
Spark Plugs
Coils (besure to visually inspect every NEW coil before installing, see below)
IMT O-Rings
Serpentine Belt
Cleaned MAF (but we found it needed replaced)
Air Filter
Cabin Filter
Oil and Filter
Vacuum Lines
ZF tranny drain, replace sleeve, pan and filter, filled to proper level
4 Rotors and Pads
cleaned up engine bay......
Through the help of fellow members here "we did it"
Note: After installing the right coils 4 wires (NOT 2 wires) I started the vehicle and #5 cylinder had a missfire (of course the one under the intake!), I removed and inspected, there was a hairline crack in it. I doubt that I cracked it but......, it may have been a manufacture defect. Anyways I put a new coil in #5 and was forced to use an old coil in cylinder #1 making it an easy swapout when the replacement coil arrived via mail. Vance850 (who lives in Raleigh) volunteered to do the #1 coil swap end of last week. Vance ran his new scanner and the car is code free and running very smoothly!
