where is findlay as your location?

Clunks are bad, but restricted performance and gearbox fault, coupled with shaking engine can be caused by many things. If the transmission was the only thing not working right (via the clunk) and the engine still idled and reved normally, I'd say bad things had happened to your transmission.

now, the ZF tranny in the stype R is very good, so now if you're saying the whole car shakes, engine stumbling etc, there's misfires or huge air/vaccum leaks...how you'll be able to tell is to get the computer's codes read by a local auto parts store...borrow one if it can't be driven...driving a misfiring car is VERY VERY bad.

Those codes, once posted back up here, will help us lead you to a more specific cause.

A list of engine codes can be found at the following link or do a search for "engine codes" and the link is about halfway down the page. This should help you narrow down the problem. I have an 03 S-type 4.L, so have had experience with some problems. Contact me any time.

Sorry, I provided the wrong link. Just had another look for the proper link, but can't find it at the moment. Someone provided a detailed listing of the error codes somewhere it this forum. If anyone knows where, please pass it on.

www.CanOBD2.com You can get both OBD2 and 1 codes for all cars, find out where the plug is, look up recalls, and even get tech help.

I experienced a similar response when the spark plug tube seals failed on my 03 S-tpye. These tubes are inset into the valve cover. I had to replace two failed coils and spark plugs, as well as all the tube seals and valve cover gaskets. The car responded exactly as you described except for the clunk. But maybe this occured if the restricted performance mode was set at the same time the transmission was shifting. When my car goes into the restricted performance (limp) mode, it lists all the possible problems on the display. So I wouldn't get too concerned about what was displayed. Only be concerned about the fact that it went into limp mode and the OBD codes show cylinder 3, 2 & 6 experienced misfires.

Not to be a jerk, but no money + aging high end luxury/performance car is not a good combo. I'm a star graduate of the Binder-Dundat school of hard knocks and suggest that you start putting money away now for the inevitable- even if it means doing without the other typical necessities of young adult life. Although these cars are very reliable and durable, they do break and wear out. Typical repairs might cost double or triple what a more mainstream car would cost, so beware. What you've saved in low purchase price will be offset by higher repair expenses.

Couldn't have put it better myself Mikey. FYI, my total cost for repairs was $1,196.41 including Grab & ****** Tax. Parts-$552.44, Labour-$411.00. My car had 63,969 km on it at the time. (40,000 miles) Oh, and the minus signs don't mean the dealer paid me.

We tend to get railroaded up here in Canada when it comes to auto purchase and repair costs. But we are Canadian. Canadians get it up the wazoo and say "Thank you very much" as you probably already know.

Cheers.

Just a suggestion, check the voltage from the alternator. I have an 05 and the Alternator took a dump. All of the electronics shut down in the car as it died completely. You may not have sufficient voltage going to everything and the codes being generated from that.

The first thing I felt when the alternator went was as if someone hit me from behind and there was definitely a thud to accompany it. Could be something else but I'd start there. BTW, should you need a "NEW ALT", they go for about 729 from Jaguar. There are 3rd party parts that can be used or even a rebuilt may be cheaper should that be the root cause of your problem.

I have a 2003 Jaguar S-Type and my car is doing the same thing, engine problem light is displaying and it is saying "restricted performance" when going up a hill. When I got out the car I smelled something horrible coming from my exhaust, car was shaking a bit too. Drove it again this morning and its still saying, still shakes a little but seem to drives ok. Had this problem before and it just stop doing it after I let it sit for couple of days, strange. I don't have anyone here in my hometown that will touch my Jaguar

When an ignition coil fails this could damage the catalytic converters.

The codes PDF is in the FAQs. Also, you can use Search with each of those codes.

And, please see this:

By the way I have S-Type with 150,000 miles. The shop I took it to is doing a tune up, do you think this will help or even fix the problem?
