It happens so incredibly rarely on a 2003 or later car that I wouldn't (and don't) worry about it. However, the thing to do (as posted by Jon89 for example) is to make sure the 2 bolts are snug on the trans whenever you're doing an oil change.

Dan that little piece you are inquiring about are on preface lift S Types (MY2000 thru 2002). The 2003 and up do not have that piece.

Follow jagv8s advise check the 2 8mm bolts on the transmission shift cable.

Thanks for the tips on the stuck Transmission. Yeah, I called the guy in Texas and found out that piece is NA for my model 2003 S Type. Not quite sure where those bolts are and would appreciate any advice on this, as I will be looking at what options might work here? Any advice would would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, DM

Just follow the cables going t othe trans, it is actually pretty easy to find and check when you under thier changing the oil anyways.

"The signs were hesitation, lurching, 'gearbox fault' message, lack of shifting early in the morning, then I turned off the car and turned it back on and the car would shift with no problems".

Have you read everything on 'the lurch.com'?

Leedsman.

The OP was back in February which was also when she joined. I was following the thread out of interest but appears she has gone MIA. It would be nice if we knew what the final outcome was. Trans, Electrical issue...maybe she burned the car or traded it in??? Guess we will never know. Shame since so many offered help.

(blushing) Awwe...mos' welcome! FWIW...that was the first I'd heard of them and the first time I ever checked 'em. All 4 of mine (2 on the 2003, 2 on the 2005) were snug-n-tight. Within the last week, the girls managed to drive both their cars into the oil change window at the same time, so I've completed the checks again on both and still no issue. Both good and snug. (wondering if "J-Gating" affects them?.....)I do know that neither of my S-Typers EVER do any J-Gating, beyond PNRD.....though my daughter remarked how much she likes hearing the Duratec wind up to redline the other day when we were out in her's and how she never really had opportunity to open it up on campus.....so I showed her how to make it make the noise without going very fast and drawing the attn. of the campus constable....she also caught me downshifting it and asked about that process........we'll see perhaps after I launch her back out this fall....I'd say her Christmas visit would be another oil change....if her's are loose and wifey's still tight..I'll blame it on J-gating..........Now if I could just get out of the habit of running the S's around in 5th all the time! (My XJ has "D" in both bottom corners of the Jgate.....)

Agree with sentiments previously expressed that we'd like to know what became of the OP and her issue.....Motorcarman never said anything about a Metroplexer from the forum contacting him with suspected transmission problems...in the visits I've managed to him since February. Doesn't mean she didn't, but he did my 03 xmsn fluid chg over Christmas and if he had one that close in year and mileage with a busted xmsn, I'm thinking he would've mentioned what he found and speculated on some possible causes so I could avoid doing-it-like-that.

Default update

So sorry for not keeping this thread updated. This may be TMI but shortly after my post here I was laid off my job of 10 years and about the same time going through painful separation... took a little priority over the jag issues... but here's the good news:

Mortorcarman was recommended to me who is somewhat local to me.. he's in Decatur, TX. I highly recommend him to anyone who owns a jag in in the DFW area... he's fair, honest, knows what he's doing.. and discovered I had low transmission oil for starters.

He changed out the transmission oil pan, fixed the leak. Checked out my codes... no transmission failure. Caught the problem in plenty of time and now Jag is humming along with minor issues here and there.

No more lurching either.

This forum rocks in helpfulness so thanks again to everyone's genuine and sincere effort to help out.

Decatur is about a 45 minute drive for me, but well worth it.

Kindest Regards from TX,

Abigail

the problem turned out to be low transmission oil. Motorcarman of Decatur, TX found the problem and promptly solved it.

Abigail,
Great news about the Jag...really sorry about the other stuff. Thanks for checking back in, and very glad to hear you got out to see Motorcarman. Best of luck in replacing the job. It's a tough economy all over out there...but you are in as good a place as any in the country right now to be looking....there is a BIT of economic activity going on here, at least.

we're new Jag owners with a 03' S with 44k miles. If you come to a complete stop our car starts off in low. If you don't get to a complete stop but almost a complete stop the transmission hesitates and then grabs, almost like the transmission downshift wasn't complete.

Any thoughts?

I may need to schedule with JagMac if they are legitimate

This is "The lurch" look here Lurch.com
there is a transmission reflash which may help, some have also found a fluid change to help.
