Just a little bit of long overdue follow up on this, plus a bit of an unusual twist.
The small town I live in has a taxi service that runs a fleet of Mercedes, Lincolns and of all things, Jag 3.0 S-types. There's probably no harsher duty cycle than life as a taxi, so I started talking to the owner/driver about brake life, servicing difficulties etc etc. Never occurred to me to ask before. His recommendation was to try Raybestos ceramic pads with Raybestos rotors as being best all round at a reasonable cost. My car was nearby so he took a quick 5 foot glance at my rotors and (correctly) predicted that they were toast.
I also have the good fortune of having a car parts store where the owner knows and enjoys cars and will spend hours pouring through hard copy catalogues looking for info rather than the typical pimply face kid that has to remember NOT to say 'you want fries with that?' to each customer.
His experience was also positive with the Raybestos products so those were ordered. Regarding the tool required to retract the piston, he was aware that the typical four sided universal piece did not fit some cars, including his own Ford product. A simple five minute session with a file was required to modify said tool to fit.
Replacement was very straight forward using the JTIS instructions for ensuring that the p/brake was released. The only surprise was the rear surface of the rotors. Absolutely destroyed! No wonder I was getting a thumping sound and feel in the pedal. A quick check with a micrometer revealed that the thickness was well below minimum so the rotors will serve someone well as boat anchors in their new life.
I have to say that the new pads and rotors are superb in 'feel' and appear exceed the OEM pads in stopping power for a given pedal pressure. Makes me feel like swapping out the front pads which are presently OEM.
Very positive experience so far.

Raybestos has made good-quality, very affordable brake components for decades. I wouldn't hesitate to use them on our S-Type....
Back in the summer I replaced our S-Type's factory front pads with a set of Wagner ThermoQuiet semi-metallic pads that I picked up at Advanced Auto Parts for less than $60. Original rotors were fine so I elected not only to stay with them, but not to turn them. These Wagner pads now have about 8,000 miles on them. They are far quieter than the factory pads were, they stop just as good, and they put out less than a quarter of the brake dust that the factory pads did....
I'd say that these Wagner pads are in the same category and range as your Raybestos pads. Others can spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on exotic brake components if they choose to, but there is really no need to do so. Our experiences are proving that....
By the way, these Wagner ThermoQuiet pads come with a lifetime warranty so once you install them, future brake pads are free for as long as you own the car. Makes it even more of a no-brainer to go with a product like this one....

if you are questioning my post I was referring to this as its similar to what I was experiencing
2) Under moderate braking a rapid thumping can be heard from the rear consistent with wheel speed. No vibration felt though steering wheel.
I found it to be a cracked disk (rotor)

Hey, guys. Question on how to check brake pad wear (ie, remaining thickness) on 2005 Jaguar S Type (standard brake system)?
- Without removing the tire, I can insert a feeler gauge between the disc retainer and the rotor and get 0.115 inch (front) and 0.075 inch (rear).
- Is that how to check the pad against the 0.08 inch spec for minimum acceptable? Dealer indicates the front pads to be in the "red condition" and need to be replaced, but does not say anything about the rear. I feel like I am missing something in my simple measurement.
- Lastly, do the pads squeal when ready for replacement and prior to damaging the rotor?
I can't find something this simple in the owners manual or in Alldata, oddly enough.
