I'll ask again....

Leedsman, what replacement transmission fluid have you selected to use, assuming you go ahead with your planned ATF fluid change next week?

Thanks for all the information.
I have been studying the report I got when I collected the car.
It said:-
"Carry out IDS check no DTC in TCM found dtc in ecs for 3 - 4 gear p0783 carry out check to gtr jaguar found jtb 71v2 relevant for harsh gear change.
advise calibration carry out ref jtb 71v2 and drive cycle and retest.
carry out calibration from z67k5658x202x to z67k5662x202w, carry out adaptation learn found gear change improved."
The mechanic must have taken the car out for quite an extended test drive judging by the fuel guage drop. I assume he was possibly training the gearbox. I dont know if the calibration numbers relate to the software version. I am using the car again Monday, I will continue to report any changes.
Can anybody translate the acronyms please?

Thanks for those details.

I'll have a go:
IDS is the dealer tool (Integrated Diagnostic System) - plugs into the OBD socket down near your shin
gtr is GTR - Global Technical Reference (www.jaguartechinfo.com)
DTC is Diagnostic Trouble Code (an OBD-II code)
ecs I suspect is electronic control (system? sub-system?)
jtb 71v2 is usually known as JTB00071v2 (Jag Tech Bulletin 71 version 2) and I'm attaching it for completeness
drive cycle means the sequence of speeds, coast downs etc to get the car to re-learn how it handles (seriously complicated, but fairly well documented e.g. in JTIS - the workshop manual)
calibration means software+parameters, yes roughly software version and those z ones are for the gearbox
Interestingly - to me - mine is Z65K5656X202ROW (it's readable using OBD command, service 9, PIDs 3 & 4), but I have a 2004 STR. Which engine is yours?

For non-UK people, you will have different calibrations, I think. Anyone with an ELM (e.g. ELM327) OBD lead, I can have a go at talking you through how to read it.

hmm, you had a DTC in the TCM (Transmission Control Module cf PCM i.e. Powertrain CM, meaning the engine one) P0783. Don't panic. Maybe it won't come back.

Thank you Jagv8 for the very useful information. I am amazed by the training procedure the Bulletin describes. If the garage mechanic carried it out as described I am impressed.
Took the car out today early to avoid traffic to a local stretch of dual carriageway with plenty of lay-bys. Drove for about twenty miles accelerating from 20mph to 70 using the laybys for the slow bits. Car drove like a dream. At intervals I slowed down to 30 then gave it about half throttle. Before reprogramming it was always reluctant to change down. Not any more, dropped two gears, accellerated smoothly to 70 no problem. The car is more lively than before and even more of a pleasure to drive.

Default Update on outcome

I have been driving the car now for a couple of weeks after the Garage repair. I have trained the gearbox for 200 miles as recommended and driven about 300 miles more. I am glad to report that all is now well. Car is performing great, smooth gearchanges, no lurching. Acceleration has improved and overall it's now a joy to drive.
Towed a caravan recently and it coped with that with no fuss. I left the transmission in fully automatic and it was as if there was no extra load at all. Well satisfied.

Excellent!
If you're going to tow, on most cars it's common to add an extra tranny oil cooler to avoid the risk of autobox failure. I don't see the jag as different so you may want to consider that.
