Default 2003 S-type Key

Does anybody know where I can get a 2003 Jaguar S-Type key made and not have to pay the high dealer price.

Short answer is no. Check out this thread.

As I understand it, about the only way you can save is to buy a used remote portion. The key part comes from the dealer. Dealer I talked to doesn't even cut the keys they order them out. You can also get a valet key (cheaper)which doesn't have a remote but will open and start the car.

Bodyman has it right, the dealer has to program the keys.

Over here a few locksmiths can do it, too.

I'd wager it is the #1 shock to the used S-type buyer. The bite-marks on my cheek are fading a bit after 2.5 yrs...but still quite visible!

BTW, Kikazz, beware if you lose the one, you will LIKELY have to buy two after it is towed to the dealer unless you find one who both has the knowledge and willingness to do the foil-covered decoy key trick....

Call a good Locksmith in your town and ask if he can do it for Jag..

Once, I locked my keys in the trunk and was pissed off cuz I only had 1 key...

Called several locksmiths and found 1 who was confident enough to open it, he came and man he took less than 20 second to open the driver door.

I asked him if he can make a separate key he took another 60 seconds and handed me the Key which worked!!!

I was like "I'm IMPRESSED!"

Bill was less than $100 for both jobs...

What he told me that he can't program the remote but the key, if you want to have remote programmed then only dealer can do it.

Hope it helps.

Thanks,
Rizwan

Actually any mechanic that has the jag computer can program them. Most of them are considerably cheaper than the dealer.

If anybody knows of one of these alternatives in the Pittsburgh area, please let me know. I only have one key also.

Jim - I only had one remote fob/key for my STR, I went with the valet key option through Bobby Rahal Jag/LR in Wexford. It was about half the cost of the full on new remote fob with new key - somewhere around $150 or so, I'll see if i can find my invoice.

Also took .5 hr shop time for programming once the key arrived. IIRC, they had the key 2 or 3 days after I placed the order (via the parts dept - Will is a good guy there).

I don't know if there is another cheaper way to get a working remote and key. A valet for emergencies was good enough for me.

Thanks Chris. Will at Bobby Rahal is the guy I talked to. He said they don't have the cutting machine there but can order them cut with the VIN and proof of ownership. He was very helpful. I also called A&L (which is closer) but the parts guy didn't seem much interested.

Hey Jim,

Dug up my invoice. They valet key was about $165. Programming was about $80 (I had a gift card to cut the price down, but you'd likely have to pay the full rate).

Definitely not cheap, but a lot cheaper than what I was quoted for a full on key fob with remote, which IIRC was in the $400 to $500 range.

Will and I are on a first name basis (long time customer) and he ordered the key for me in advance no problems. If you gave him the VIN and maybe emailed or faxed a registration card over he'd probably order the key for you without having to go to the dealer to show ID, if he even is requiring that first or just at pickup. I paid for the valet key cutting via credit card over the phone, so it only took 1 trip to the service dept for programming.

I can't say enough good things about this dealer - they have always been great to me. They will give you a loaner for free upon request if needed for your appointment.
