Default 2003 S-Type R cooling issue

So while I was driving to work today my STR temperature guage dropped to 0 and restricted performance came up on the display but the car was driving fine. I pulled off the highway and checked the code, it was P0116. The needle came back up, and the car is running cold, below half actually. It's about 39 degrees outside but the air coming out of the vents is lukewarm at best. Thank god the seat warmer is working! Brrrrrrrrrrr.

I know the guage isn't all that accurate in the first place. There's 2 things I know could probably have an impact.

1.) I know for sure I need an oil change.
2.) It probably needs a new thermostat & seal.

Anyone think of anything else?

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open.

Yeah that's what I was thinking, or the seal is leaking.

Which seal? Are you losing coolant?

I meant the seal around the t-stat inside the housing. Thankfully it's an easy fix.

A few months ago I had to replace one on the XKR. My 4 year old daughter asked if she could help me (tear) so after breaking the bolts loose for her I let her do it, and you know what? The little girl is handy with a wrench! She paid close attention, and did everything I told her to, she put the new seal on the replacement, swapped out the t-stat and put the housing back on (with a little bit of help from dad), she put the bolts back in and I torqed them down for her.

It was a proud dad moment!

I'll have her do this one too, and take pictures

Think she would be willing to come over and help me blow and rake leaves tomorrow?

Sure did! All I had in my pocket was a 20, so I gave it to her for the help and you know what she did? She put it in her piggy bank and said "Gonna save it for college".
