Hi there Bought first Jag in my life and so far I love it. However there seems to be alot of road noise that sound like it might be tire/wheel related. I just purchased the car so i'm not sure what the norm is, it just seems excessive. The car has brand new tires so that is throwing me a little, I mostlikely will have them re-balanced and rotated to start with. I'm wondering if there are any cronic problems with bearings or something like that. The car is a 2003 S type with 44K on it. Any inside information would be great.

I have the exact same issues. My 03 str has toyo proxes FZ4's on it and it makes a high pich sound and a ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ as i'm going down the road and a howling at about 1700 rpm. I thought ( and still do)think it is wheel bearings but I took it in and of course theres nothing wrong so i'm going to try electronic balancing. I also tried playing with the air perssure. We'll see what happens. Maybe we just have noisy tires!

My 1993 XJ40 is very noisy, or at least more so than I would have expected from this level of car. I got it two weeks ago, and my first impression was the same as yours. Louder than any of our other domestic cars, including, a 1989 Buick, 1991 Cherokee, and a 2006 Mustang...

Update, I had the tires balanced and rotated, during this I inspected the tires and found my 2 rear tires are cupping on the inside tread. almost un noticable until the wheels were off. The majority of the noise moved from the back to the front. Still noisy. I didn't expect this much noise from an expensive european motorcar. I don't think the noise is going to go away untilI replace the tires. The balance and rotation did rid about 50 percent of the noise though.

I also was very uncomfortable with my 2003 S-Type road noise. When I bought the car (used) the dealer had just put on new tires - Falken ZIEX ZE-512. Since they were new, I continued to use them, but I was told during a recent service that they were cupping - possibly increasing the noise. So, I went to my neighborhood Walmart Store and ordered four Goodyear Assurance ComforTred ($127.16 each) I was amazed at the difference in the noise level these tires make. My S-Type now rides and drives smooth and QUIET - the way I think it should be. Anyone interested can take a look at these tires at:

Be sure you look at ComforTred - not TripleTred - the ComforTred have 10 rating in both ride comfort and quiet ride. Believe me - there IS a BIG difference in the noise level. I now have a luxury ride, as well as a sport ride. That is what I was looking for. BTW, I also found this worked on my 2000 Lincoln LS. It had Michelin's which were much to noisy. It is now nice and quiet with the GoodYear ComforTread. I recommend them to any of you who are wanting a quieter Jag.

the goodyears are a good idea. i use to work forgoodyear and can say i would put them on a jag if i had one. the european brands like michelin and continental seem to use harder rubber compounds for that sporty feel. if you want to go for a quiter ride, goodyears or maybe bfgoodrich would be the way to go.
