2003 S-type "Won't start"
I'm looking at a 2003 S-type with 190K miles that will not start.
So, I have no idea what kind of issues the motor or tranny will have yet.
My questions:
1. Is the engine pretty much toast at 190,000 miles?
2. Is the transmission toast after 100,000 miles ?
3. What are the typical rebuilt engine and transmission costs?
4. Are there any reprogramming issues involved in a engine/transmission swap?

We have members here who have S-Types that have done more than 200,000 miles. Invariably they have been and continue to be well-maintained. Whether or not the car you are interested in would be worth offering on depends greatly upon its service history. If you cannot obtain the bulk of the service history on this car, walk away quickly and quietly....
Spend some time reading the FAQ stickies at the top of the S-Type section. You'll gain quite a bit of required knowledge in a reasonably short period of time....
Good luck....

The car is up sale for $750.00. The pictures of the exterior and interior look good (no dents or ravaged seats). It is just the engine and transmission I'm looking for info about their
durability.
I currently own a XJ8 (X308) and a 94 XJS. They both have their own unique quirks when
it comes to engine and transmission repairs.
So, I thought why not try a S-type.
I'm still getting more info on the car and its problems. I will update as I get it.
