Some say the 05's+ actually redline first through third, some say they don't. I would say its really up to your tires and driver skill over the year of the car. I think our forum members who frequent the track who have 03's do just as well as the later year models. Once you start modding, it really doesn't matter...

Same engine but the ratings were shifted a bit when a different standard was used. Only made very small changes in the numbers. Basically the small Japanese cars were over rated while the larger V-8's were a bit under rated. This happened in 2005 because the SAE introduced another standard.
See this for a better explanation.

On the street the 2005 and up cars seem to run up to red line better than the 2003-2004 STR's. We don't see as many postings as we use to but many complaints from the 2003 STR owners of short shifting before redline especially in 1st and 2nd gears. One of the early road test's on the STR it only ran a 14.1 sec quarter mile because it shifted at 5900 rpm instead of the 6100 rpm redline!!
Yes VVT started on the STR in 2006 and sort of added 20HP but we never really got to how or why. And the performance numbers are the same for the 2006-2008 STR's so I am just not sure if it gained you anything on the street.
