What happens when you put it in gear and try to drive away? Does the engine just rev as if still in P or N? Or does the engine bog down and maybe the transmission groans?

Also, watch the P, R, N, and D indicators at the base of the shift lever. 2003+ cars are notorious for the bolts backing out that secure the shift cable to the transmission. When that happens, you can freely move the lever but nothing else happens. The P, R, N, and D indicators are feedback from the transmission innards, NOT the shift lever itself. If the lever moves but the indicator lights do not respond, the cable has most likely come loose.

Can you move the lever out of P? There's an interlock that must release first. If it won't release, you can move the lever about halfway to R but no further. In that case, it could be a bad solenoid or the lack of a required input.

6hp26 transmission.

Maybe low on fluid but probably means trans is toast anyway. You can try and find one and roll the dice at a wrecking yard.

Otherwise these trans are very expensive to rebuild.

Check under the vehicle for leaks from the gearbox as it may just be low on fluid.

Use the search function for this forum as there are several threads that discuss items to look for when considering an S-Type purchase.

Don't forget that there are 2 small bolts that can loosen and even fall out. These hold the shift cable to the transmission. Be SURE when you are under the car to look and check these 2 small bolts.
