I think they fit in the groove in a block of plastic that serves (well, is intended to, anyway) to clamp the fender and fascia together near the wheelwell. I had the whole mess off our 2003 Base a coupla years ago and had a bum-seam in that area and recall finding a plastic block adrift in there, and similar clips clinging to a bit of lip on fascia/fender (wing!) interface and I took them off and refitted them to the block, which is then fixed to the inner liner by an M6 if memory serves...unfortunately, I, like Dimension, had not yet been schooled in the Joyce'sJag photodocumentation graduate course....

if the ones I'm trying to remember...no holes..they slide into a groove in the plastic block, and clamp onto lips on wing and bumper fascia. Screw hole is in plastic block and I said it backwards above....screw is actually for fixing wheelwell liner to block, block is clutching onto body-bits like a long-haired, teenage rock climber in a Top Gear episode...

I have those clips too. They clip on to the plastic block that is bumper is bolted to just the other side of the wheel arch liner.
So when you take the 10mm bolt off that holds the corner of the bumper on (near the side markers), that clip also needs to be pulled off. But this could be different on the 2005+ cars.

Many thanks, Rick! Just a couple of points regarding the '99-'03 S-Type. The outermost bolts you refer to "down there" don't seem to have anything to do with the bumper skin on the older models. However, there are a pair of 10mm bolts inside the front wheel-arch, that are going to be impossible to work with without a ratchet spanner. The front wheel-arch liners on the '99 only have two T30 fasteners to remove.

Thank you Rick for posting this how to, it was incredibly useful when I recently changed my bulbs.
If you have xenon bulbs and are looking for a short walk through, I typed up a brief overview on the Hints, tips and tricks page (page 4, post 73).

Hi. Thanks for the diy. Very useful.
For those with headlight washers, I wrapped a shop towel over a flat heat. Then coming in from the center of the car, gently work it loose. One side popped out easy, the other needed a little more jiggling.
Also, for me there was one more step. You need to remove a bolt on the inside of the bumper, behind wheel well on each side.

I was thinking of starting a bumper thread to get an answer to a question I have.
What type of plastic are our bumper covers made out of?
I am getting ready to start widening my bumpers to match my fender flares and am trying to figure out the best way to cut then either weld or glue them back together.
