Default 2005 fuel sender locking ring removal question

Ok fella's, I have searched and searched. I found the earlier model how to but nothing on the 2005 and up lock ring.

I tried a block of wood and tapping, no dice. I tried to separate where two fins are not touching (7:00 position in picture), no dice. I did pry up, this did seem to work for a third of the way around, then tragedy, the ring cracked, not in half but close. I tapped the pried up portion back down and seems to be holding.

Has anyone removed this ring without trashing it? If so please enlighten me, I would be grateful.

Why are you trying to remove it? Check the forums. There is at least two cheap tool options that works better than the wood/hammer trick, even though that should've worked.

One is cutting notches into a PVC pipe.

OEM tool almost $250.

Thank you for the reply. The black ring is not like the 2004 or older S Types. From what I can see, it doesn't rotate to loosen.

Oh well, I tried... your right.. Just looked at the link. Maybe lean upon JTIS for removal instructions and associated tool you may need.

Another thought... Is it screwed on or possibly clamped on with spring pressure?

Update, there should be some worm clamp holding that on there. Since it's cracked your going to need to replace it. They're costly starting at $100 & up to replace

Default 2005 fuel sender locking ring removal question

Hi Guys, I have an 07 car and removed the ring by drilling two holes in a piece of wood and dropping two parallel punches in the holes to line up with slots in the retaining ring, it worked very well

Jaffa, does your ring look like the one in the picture in post #1? The fins look to be to thin to be used as contact points for twisting.

Does the whole unit (sender/pump) twist with the locking ring for removal? Or does the ring only twist?

Just FYI members of the Jaguar clubs of North America can loan the tools. Interesting enough that there are two tools as the supercharged car requires an extra slot. Best of lucl with 'other' methods as those rings are getting old and very brittle.

The wonky fuel gauge problem. Fill up the needle goes to the full position. As fuel is used the needle will fall to about 3/4 tank and stay there until next fill up. As some of you older members know, I have a talking gas gauge (the wife).
I did some very spirited driving the other day and the gauge worked as it should, but soon returned to being wonky.

Our S Type has the original fuel pump and sender from the factory. No updated fittings.

Below is a picture of our 2005 ring compared to Neils 2003, again very different. Note the factory split at the lower red arrow. I thought maybe that had something to do with the removal. Maybe it does, I will look into a disposable locking ring. I mentioned when prying up, I did crack the outer portion of the ring. I tapped it back into place and seems to be holding without gas/vapor leaks, got lucky.

Sorry for sideways pictures.

Does JEPC at least show the different part?

Then maybe look on ebay etc because replacements may have helpful pics.

Or even buy one of the new kind (used) so you have it in your hands to study.

Rick,

Sorry about the cracked ring. Glad it is not causing you any problems thus far. I assume there is some type of gauge float in the tank, and perhaps it became saturated years ago and started causing your gauge issues. Please keep us posted on your progress....

Did joycesjag get a new fuel tank through the recall years ago? My car did prior to us purchasing it in December 2008. No fuel gauge issues thus far....

No Jon, gas tank, seals etc. are all what came with vehicle. Four or five years ago the only time I had it at the dealer (front end alignment and key fob reset), they said that Jaguar would not replace if it had not failed by then. I felt the same and wasn't to worried.

Wondering around eBay. I have found replacement retaining rings from $13.95 up to $125.00 as abonano mentioned. I will figure out which one order, then figure out how to remove existing. I will try to source through SNG. I see they have sender unit parts starting at $75.00.

I will update when I figure it all out! Guess I will be the 2005 guinea pig w/pics as usual.

It doesn't look like the ring can turn on it's own.
Isn't that a locating tab at 1 o'clock?
