I have a 05 S type.

On the paperwork they gave me it says MIL ON P0171 and they repaired the leaking manifold tuning value.

That's it.

I'm guessing it's not acting up when it's hooked up to the code retrievel machine.

I don't know. I do know it's not a good feeling to be scared to drive your vechile. LOL.

About those codes. Most of the codes people ask about here are generic codes. That is part of the whole OBD II plan. If you see the letter "B" thats body, "C" is chassis, "P" is powertrain, "U" is network. The number following the letter tells if the code is a generic (must be the same no matter who made it) or manufacturer specific. "0" and "2" are the generics. "1" is manufacturer specific and "3" is both generic and manufacturer specific. The next number tells you what system the problem is in and the next 2 numbers tell you what section of the system the problem is in.

I use www.CanOBD2.com I have checked what they give and they hit the nail on the head. Please don't bad mouth a site that you haven't checked out for yourself. I have seen at least one site that said it had the Jaguar codes and WRONG!

IF SOMETHING HAS WIRES GOING TO IT, DO YOURSELF AND YOUR WALLET A BIG FAVOR AND EITHER DO THE TESTS YOURSELF FIRST OR MAKE SURE THAT THE MECHANICS DO IT RIGHT.

GIT R DONE.

The way the car behaved could be a failing or discharged battery. It coud be the shop didn't look after it well when doing the repair. Not good, but it happens. But it would be reasonable for them to fix the issue as it does look like they caused it!

Take the car back and see what they have to say. The P0171 is often found to be a vacuum leak but I do not think you have all the codes. If you had a red warning on the dash I think it is a Fail Safe warning and if I recall the P0171 provides a Restricted Performance amber warning. You need to call and find out the actual codes then and now. When you say it would not start for 30min is it that the engine would not turn over or is it that it would crank but not start?

Just left Autozone having them test my battery, & low and behold, the dealership left a battery booster hooked up to the battery. The guy removed the battery booster and the battery tested 88%. It was purchased 5/10. I then started the engine and he said the alternator is bad. So I'm speeding to the dealership now for a new alternator at there expense. Hopefully I'll make it there before I have to coast to the side of the road.

Ouch!
With that evidence they've no chance of arguing it wasn't their fault!! It may not be the alternator, but so long as they fix it properly who cares

Just dropped the jag off. The manager (a know it all) swears up and down it's not the alternator, but he says they never checked it. They must be pricey.

Okay. Just got off the phone with the dealership with the manager. Now when I dropped the car off this morning, I TOLD the manager to check the car in THIS ORDER. First check the alternator, if that reads correctly, Then check the four and two wire plugs at the throttle body to make sure the plug and the prongs on the sensor are not dirty and are connected properly, and the clips are not broken. IF that checks out, check the wiring on the loom that crosses right behind the articulation joint to make sure it hasn't rubbed through. Otherwise your going to have to cut the loom open and fix the wiring. If all of that fails, then the car needs a new throttle body.

That's right, they looked at me like I was talking chinese. It took every inch of me not to burst out laughing. Of course I didn't have a clue as to what I had memorized.

Well, the manager, said first he had the lojack people unistall the lojack that was put on the car, and then he tested the alternator and it read 14.2, so they are replacing the throttle body. The part will be in later on today and it'll be ready in the morning for me to pick it up.

Now, I never authorized him to take the lojack off. So I will deal with that once the car is fixed. I did tell him to check the plugs first and make sure the clips weren't broken or damaged like you all said. So if he orders this throttle body part and the same thing happens, I'm going to have a fit.

I do not know what is wrong with people today but they seem to test the customers, the very ones that keep them in business. Whatever happened to customer first? Just remember that his performance evaluation is a big part of customer service and If you are not satisfied tell his/her boss and watch what takes place the next time. Oh, that is if they are still working in the same capacity.

I feel confident that they checked your car over and made the right conclusion. They knew that you were upset and they had to make it right. Give it time and see what takes place.

Did you ask for the codes?

I forgot to ask for the codes, but I will be calling them back in about a hour before they close and I will get them and post them.

Just talked to the manager, he said they have put the new throttle body on it and it's running just fine. (Heard that before) He said they have put 20 miles on it and they'll test it again in the morning and I can come pick it up.

I did ask him are they sure they checked the plugs and wiring, otherwise I'll be right back up there when it cuts off again, and I will not be plesant. He assured me everything was checked but he did forget what the code was that popped up. After I fussed, he said he would have it for me on the paperwork when I pick it up tomorrow.

To the OP - do yourself a huge favor and get your battery voltage read and have the battery load tested free of charge at any local car parts store (Advanced, Pep Boys)

Big +1 to failing battery.

I believe the couple above posts were in reference to a new members post that had very little to do with this thread. It now has been moved to its own new thread.
