Default 2005 S-Type 3.0 Stuck in Reverse

All,

This morning when I arrived at work my 2005 S-Type stuck in reverse. The shifter was in Park, but the R light was lit on the J-Gate. Long story short, I jacked the car up and found the 8mm Bolt on the shifter cable. It was quite loose so I tightened it up and that solved the issue.

Note I said "Bolt". That's right, the rear one is missing. Does anyone know what the specifications for a replacement bolt are?

Thanks in advance!

I called the great folks and S-N-G Barrat and they informed me it is a 8mm 6X20 Bolt. No idea on the thread, so I'll have to take the existing bolt in and match it up. I'll post it up when I have the information.

I'll try and take pictures of the Step-By-Step for the FAQ.

There is almost no tool-working room in that area so be prepared with a small-handed kid standing by to help you get the bolt in place and the nut started....

And from now on, whenever you're underneath the car doing an oil-and-filter change / tire rotation, take your 8mm box wrench with you and snug up those two nuts. I do this at least twice a year and the nuts usually tighten up about a quarter-turn for me....

Hopefully a small ratcheting box wrench will help a lot.

This is starting to be about as common as failed DCCVs!

I've lost track of just how often we've encouraged people to DIY check those bolts at least yearly.

Yeah. Mea Culpa. I had it jacked up about 8 months ago working on something else, and I did look, but I was, I don't know, I guess disoriented is the right word, and didn't realize that the transmission shift cable comes in at the rear of the transmission. I was looking at the front. So I didn't find the bolts. Anyway, an ounce of prevention would have saved me a pound of cure...

At least you're on it now and though it's a pain it'll be cheap to fix!

Well,

Good news. I actually found the bolt in the parking lot at my home. I was able to identify it for those that aren't as lucky as I was and have to purchase one. It's an 8mm 6X20 Flange Bolt, fine threads.

It was a little bit of a pain to install, but I was able to get it in, so the problem has been resolved.

Thanks for all of your help.
