2005 S type 4.2 V8 need some help
#21
Just joined. I have 2006 S Type 4.2. 30,000 miles. Went limp a few days ago. I told Jaguar I want limp disabled. They want to go thru their protocols for inspection. Inspection showed no faults, but they recommend throttle body replacement. I declined. Dealer doesn't know how to disable the limp mode and is checking with their TechLine.
Does anyone know how to disable the limp mode?

I'd find a more competent dealer, better yet an Independent mechanic.

If you are in limp home mode then you must have a fault. If a fault is not present are they using Jaguar software to read the codes? The car is reading a fault so I would say they are not. See if you can find a shop that can read the codes for Jaguar. Do not start replacing parts without direction of the codes and a good mechanic.

Disable S - Type limp mode
Sorry. I didn't give my reasons for wanting to disable. I'm aware of the complexity of the inter-related systems.
What happened was that car went into limp after turning a corner at a stop light. Went limp. I didn't know what was happening ... out of gas? throttle disconnected? ... then I saw 'park brake error' on left dash screen, and then, 'cruise disabled' on the right. I tried the accelerator, I 'banged' on the brakes ... then I figured our I was in limp, on a 55 mph city street, with no where to park. I got into the narrow bike lane, couldn't find the emerg flasher switch, and limped for 1/2 mile to turn out into mini-mall. I parked, shut down, selected park, presumably park brake set, got out, locked doors, checked the oil, unlocked, restarted, got lumpy idle, and hunting for rpm, but error lights were out.
I drove off and car seemed OK.
Ran the codes with local mech. No codes showing.
Afraid to drive freeway in HOV lane in case of limp failure. Contacted JRL and they ran the codes. None showing. They suggested replace throttle body which seems futile because there is no apparent fault with it.
Safest positive fix is to disable limp mode. I'll risk the trans, but not my life and that of others.
Does anyone know how to disable the limp mode ... or how it works. What does it do to limit speed to walking pace???

Apparently not.
Yes, many of us know how it works. You can't disable it, for good reasons.
Classic signs of a failing battery. Start there.

>Yep, check your battery.
Yup, my immediate thought, these cars are very picky about electrons.
Easy to eliminate that as a problem so that you could move on to more problematic issues, if need be.

He loved to drive his Jaguar...
So welcome to the machine

+1 Click the link in my signature for lots of battery info. It's always the first suspect when things go wrong electronically.

I replied to Gus so this may be duplicate. No, cruise was not on. Left window, in tach, showed, Park Brake Fault. Right window showed Cruise Not Available. They could not be found in the computer by technicians, maybe because of my re-boot process. I shut down the car, got out, locked doors ... the re-entered and started up with no msgs showing.
The other day on starting up first thing in the morning, I got msg in right window showing Cruise Not Available and idle was lumpy. I shut down, re-started and got the same thing. I called dealer so they could hear me go thru the start-up and learn what I was seeing. This time, no msgs in windows, but got engine warning light. I took it to the dealer and they diagnosed and changed the thermostat.
So I don't know if the thermostat seal problem was creating the other spurious signals, or if it was merely a coincidence that it showed while trying to troubleshoot the faulty signals.
I'm still in discussion with JLR NA and would like to hear from anyone who has any insights to this situation.

Did you get the battery checked? Just because it starts the car does not mean the battery is good. You are telling us Cruise not available, Park Brake not available, Idle Lumpy, Hunting for idle and Throttle Body replacement and the icing on the cake you end up with a Thermostat seal replacement, I am having a hard time with what is going on with the car.
It is hard to understand your car going into limp mode and throwing flags up with no codes and what is even harder to understand is that is that they changed your thermostat when you clearly have another issue. I would highly recommend that you have the battery tested and I am talking about a load test that is FREE at any AutoZone, Advance Auto, Sears and many other places.
Quit playing around with it and get to the meat of the problem and take one step at a time.

Thanks Gus. Batt showed 12V, alt 14V, under load 9V. Don't know if batt has 'shelf life', it has only 28,400 miles on it in FL and CA, but will likely replace it on spec depending on what JLR has to say in the next few days about spurious warning msgs and engagement of limp home mode. It's all a mystery to me, and to them also.
Check engine warning light led to codes 173CPJ and 767CPJ for thermostat seal replacement. These are the numbers from the work order. I believe they are the codes.
Throttle body has been mentioned but no codes or other reason to change at this time.

Don't wait for pearls of wisdom from JLR. If they had all the answers, this website probably wouldn't exist. Weird codes from a low battery might be a revelation to many dealers, it's been proven a thousand times over here.
