I parked my 2005 3.0 S-Type, went into the store and when I got back and tried to start it, NOTHING. All the dash lights come on as usual but the shifter won't move from PARK. The "R"everse indicator is lit and when the key is on, if anyone walks by the rear, the sensors pick up their proximity as if it really is in reverse, which would prevent it from starting, as well. I disconnected the battery, and reconnected after about an hour, no change. I tried to jump it, no affect. It sat overnight, no change. When I release the Auto parking brake, I am able to push the car forward and backward for about a foot, as if it were in neutral. No faults showing and gel battery is less than a year old. It started and ran just fine up to this point with no odd sounds or issues. Any ideas?

 

There are locking bolts on the shift cable which have been known to come loose and cause problems, I'd take a look there for possibly a simple fix.
