semi-synth 5W30 is the spec I think

the fuel depends on where you live (yes, really, so check your car's handbook) - and whether diesel!

SIXX: I just posted on your New Member post so I know it's a North American 3.0 that your asking about. Just a note for the future, it would be good to put your general location and what motor when posting.

Anyhoo..... I use 5w-30 full synthetic and change it myself every 5k... My choice.

The manual specs premium fuel, 93 octane. That is what I use. Highly sensitive fuel components so get good gas for her....

I use Castrol GTX 5W-30 in my S Type. Change the oil and filter every 5K miles. I run only premium gas as well.

I use the premium grade gas. I've not been consistent on the oil brand, however, I have stuck with synthetic per the manual. I've used the Gastrol and Mobil One.

The manual says to change the oil every 10K or one year. I usually change between 6 and 9 months.

Default G-Oil

I use G-Oil, an animal fat based biodegradeable "green" oil from Green Earth Technologies. I use the 5W30 and try to only use Shell V-Power Premium 93 octane. So far the combination is wonderful, after switching to G-Oil, my highway mileage went from 29.4 to 31.3.

Castrol GTX 5W-30 conventional oil and Purolator L20195 oil filter changed every 6,000 miles (most recently last Sunday at 36,000 miles on the odometer). 91 octane mid-grade gas, not loyal to any specific brand.

I see nothing that gives preference to synthetics over 'regular' oil. Am I misreading?

No, you are correct. Jaguar does not specify synthetic oil.

My 2003 manual states synthetic oil every 10K or 12 months whichever comes first.

There has always been a tremendous amount of debate concerning synthetic vs. conventional oil. I think the bottom line is as long as you run a decent brand of oil and change it along with your oil filter on a regular basis, you'll be fine. You must also check your oil level on a regular basis and top it up as required. It amazes me how many folks simply don't check their fluids or tire pressures between paying somebody else to do their routine service. Simple checks of fluid and pressures will save hundreds if not thousands of dollars of premature wear-and-tear on a vehicle over its lifespan....

Very strange. Neither my 2003 hardcopy or electronic copy 'passport to service' and 'driver's handbook' make that distinction. The PTS does mention the 10K mile interval but neither book specifies oil type beyond the expected API SJ/EC ratings.

As Jon89 mentions, frequent changes are far more important than oil type or brand.

Waking this thread to life as I'm trying to read up on what oil to use. The 2003 S-Type manual as linked to elsewhere on this forum states:

Caution: Do not use oil additives of any type. Use only
specified lubricants. Note that Jaguar does not approve
the use of synthetic engine oil in the V6 engine.

As I have a V6 engine in my Jag, I'm a bit confused by this as the dealer, a Jag specialist in the south of Sweden, uses Castrol Magnatec synthetic. I was ready to buy the Castrol but now I'm having doubts...

Show the dealer what Jaguar recommends and lets us know what answer he has.

Second guessing the OEM rarely pays off. There's considerable evidence indicating that these engine live long and happy lives while following their recommendations.
