Better yet, just let the shop do an oil change using their preferred oil or let them do the level adjustment. Either way, make sure the shop checks your oil fill level and filter before it gets started again. You need to have someone who knows what they are looking for do the the looking.

BTW, any advice that Brutal gives you, you can absolutely depend upon. If you are of a mind to do so, and have someone experienced to assist, his method is quite reasonable.

Based on your location being Austin, and the summer months coming up, a 10W30 would be acceptable, as would a 5W40. Both are within the recommended viscosity ranges for your climate. Your preference in brands is also not a problem.

JTIS is also available as a free download from links found in the stickies. It is a clean download. No need to pay someone on ebay for a ripped copy that they downloaded form some random place. There is also no need to encourage such ebay sellers.

 

Be aware also that if you're running Windows 7 64 bit the JTIS program will not run as-is.

It is the result of months of hard work and careful testing by JF member Jim Lombardi and a couple of moderators.

JTIS absolutely can be installed on Windows 7 64 bit, as well as Vista and XP 64 bit.

As stated last year, from personal experience, the raw untouched download of JTIS as it existed at that time will run as-is on some Windows 64 bit systems.

The process used was: download, unpack, run installer, use JTIS ... on a Windows 64 bit system. Took maybe all of 5 minutes from the end of the download. And that included forcing a custom install location.

Jim Lombardi asked for some hints by PM, and he was given the the particular areas to examine for problems and how each area could be addressed within the Windows 64 bit systems architecture. This mainly had to do with how legacy 32 bit dll's are handled as well as the handling of permissions.

From that knowledge, he was able to install JTIS on his own 64 bit system. He then set about creating the tutorial and download packages for the benefit of all JF members running Windows 64 bit systems. Various people participated in testing of his methods in the months before public release. People using JTIS+64 bit owe Jim a big thanks for his hard work.

The notice and description are posted as stickies at the top of every applicable forum section of JF.

The difference between the Windows 64 bit systems where the original versions work, and those that do not, is a missing data access object DLL and its proper installation. The modified download packages contain the missing DLL, *and* the proper installation routine. Problem solved. It is not remotely in the realm of an "extraordinary work around" as you claim. Not everyone knows how to do it, but the packages completely avoid that knowledge gap.

The download packages also resolve the cosmetic problem of legacy winhelp being unavailable on some systems.

Use of the downloads linked from the stickies results in a completely functional JTIS install on Windows 64 bit systems.

Therefore, it is much more useful when discussing JTIS to point a user at the verified installs explained in the stickies than to moan about a possible problem that has been completely addressed and resolved.

From your first post about JTIS+64bit, a reader who did not know any better would be likely to conclude that JTIS+64bit is a no-go, when in fact, it is not a problem. That is a disservice to readers. To say otherwise by highlighting the words "as-is" would be splitting hairs as the solution was not given equal billing, nor indeed was it even mentioned.

I agree with you Mikey... Back when I installed my JTIS, I ended up having to upgrade my W7 to Professional. Then I could use Windows Virtual PC (XP mode I believe) to run my JTIS. This must have been before all the fancy computer work was done. I'm happy to know that it is much more user friendly now. Goes to show the talents of some of the members on this site.

Ok so I towed my car to the shop they said it would be 85 Plus whoa ever much fluid it took at 17 a quart, and I gave them some more royal purple and a new filter ant they put it in for 18 dollars picked up my car earlier this afternoon and it was perfect back to normal thanks for all the help and I know a lot of people were saying no need to go with expensive brand oil but my buddy works at a store and was able to get me the 7 quarts and a K&n filter all for 40 bucks so I just figured might as well do it again thanks everyone

 

$85 to fill the transmission, plus fluid, is that what you are saying? Just wanted to clarify.

$40 for 7qts of RP + K&N is a pretty dang good deal. I would have jumped on that too.
