3.0 5spd manual vs 4.2 v8
Im currently actively looking to acquire a S-type. I’ve come across a ‘03 5spd manual w/ low mileage which has peaked my interest. My original mindset was ‘05+ 4.2 or VDP, but now I’m a little torn.
What are your guys thoughts?
‘03 5 spd w/ 27k miles or ‘05 4.2 w/ 64k miles?
pros n cons? All opinions greatly appreciated.

For practicality I would choose the manual 3.0. But, it depends upon the individual cars involved. A well cared for V8 might get my vote.
Which car has been looked after best?
How much power do you need? The V6 has plenty of oomph and isn't so prone to timing chain problems.
Do you like manual or prefer automatic?
How much can you afford? The V8 will use more fuel.
I love my V6 auto, but I would prefer a manual one for the times I want to have fun and play. Almost 240bhp and 146mph top speed is enough for me.
The V8 would be a bit more special, has 296bhp and 155mph top speed.
Unless you are a mechanic or have deep pockets I would avoid any poorly maintained examples of either model.

I have no preference over auto or manual. I’m leaning towards the 5spd, my concerns would be it being an ‘03 would I have more to worry about with regards to maintenance and things going wrong even though it has low mileage?
I had a 4.0 back in ‘02 and I remember the issues that I came across… the door locks and the car stuck in gear….

Yes you won't find a better drive train than the NA 4.2L V-8 and the 6 speed ZF transmission. A very good combination with little to no problems reported even at this late date.
But I forgot to ask if you can DIY any repairs? I also use my Jaguar daily and have never had any concerns as it been much better than any of my previous cars.
