Im having an issue with my 2001 s type 4.0 , years ago my wife learned a hard lesson when the plastic overflow tank cracked drained out the fluid and melted down the engine. She never noticed the temp gage. I had to replace the engine, no problems for years until recently.Engine overheats within 5 miles of driving. , no leaks. What could be going on ? engine has 85K miles , Do these engine have issues with sticky themostates ? of failing closed ? What about water pumps I m thinking its good but havent investigated yet.
The temp gage gets hot very fast, making me wonder if water isnt flowing past the sensor. I would not think the raditor would be plugging. Im looking for your all's input? Or what you all think ?

UPDATE UPDATE, on my drive home from the overheating this morning. I think i avoided the HIGH temp or overheating by turning the Heater on high, This is a 10 mile trip, when i got about 2 miles from home i turned the heater OFF. Within minutes the Temp gauge started rising. Giving me more confidence that the thermostate is sticking or stuck closed. I'm hearing this is common , Can i get more of you to give me your input or thoughts ??
I also noticed a noise near the water pump area while the engine is running ? Do the water pumps fail very often. Are they hard to change out ?? Im assuming the water pump is located behind the upper pulley on the engine ? Thanks you for your advice!!!

I agree...start with the thermostat.
A couple of points relevant to your comments:
1. As you painfully found out, when the coolant gets very, very low, if drops below the temperature sensor and may not give an overheat warning. That is why it is critical on these cars to have a functioning low coolant warning and never to ignore it.
2. The temperature gauge will sit at center scale from about 185 F to about 230 F. Unfortunately this means you will not see the real temperature until you are nearly overheating! This is the reason for the sudden rise of the needle if your thermostat sticks.

My opinion is either a stubborn air pocket or your water pump is either toast or on its way out. I disagree with the thermostat being stuck closed as if that was the case turning on the heater would have little to no effect keeping the engine coolant at temp.
You must also check the plastic thermostat housing for cracks or internal failure (broken plastic fins internal at the thermostat)
