I have a 2000 S-Type with 68,000 miles 4.0L. There is a intermintant misfire. I hooked up my scanner and looked at the misfire monitor and it shows "0" misfires. This problem has been happening for the last two months. The check engine light does work, but is not "on". I don't want to throw eight coils into this if there could be another problem. I am a Ford trained dealer technician and have never had a misfire symptom that would not show up as a misfire. I talked to a guy who had a simular symptom and he had a timing chain/tensioner issue. Is this a possibillity??[:@]Any help would be appricated.
Thanks

Hey Steve,
This might sound stupid, but that's the way your car is acting. Try pulling something and see if you can read a code...MAF, whatever...just to make sure you are getting good info. There's one guy on here (XK8)who has an OBD socketthat he can't read. Also, if you are using your Ford WDS/ IDS,you need Jag software to read the car. Even basic OBD codes might not be recognized. Most other generics should work, though. Hope your suspicion is premature, but....

It looks like I may have to do all eight coil's. If I take it to the Jaguar dealer they may not be able to read the code because the Check Engine light is not on indicating a code is set. If the misfire monitor does not pick up intermintant misfires then it seems the best thing to do is replace all eight coils with the high failure rate that I hear they have. I was concerned that this maybe a Chain/Tensioner issue so I did not want to start replacing coils if that is not where my problem is.
