4.2 into a 2000 S-Type

I'm fairly new to this sight, so sorry if this is an old, tired topic. I've recently come into possession of a beautiful S-Type 4.0, which I am very happy with, except for the rattle from the engine at startup (and sometimes when I'm accelerating in city driving).
I've been weighing my options for fixing this problem, and it seems like between replacing all the chains and tensioners and putting in a second hand engine, the latter appears to be the easier of the two (though it may cost a bit more). I plan to do all the work my self, since either option would be far too costly to have a shop do.
I'm fairly mechanical, and have a family member who is an experienced mechanic willing to help me quite a bit.
Since transplanting the 4.0 with another low milage 4.0 is no guarantee that I won't encounter the same problems down the line, I'm wondering about the feasibility of transplanting a 4.2 into my car. How difficult would it be to get the electronics to play nice? Will the ford transmission bolt right in? Anyone done this before?
I have tried selling it so I could buy a car with the 4.2, but I have not had much success with that yet.
Thank you!

Forget about getting the 4.2 into the pre-2003 S Type - the 5R55n Trans more than likely won't bolt up and you will have to replace at minimum - the ECM and engine harness (and this is being highly optimistic)- best bet - if the engine compression is good across all cylinders - get all the tensioners and guide rails changed out.

A 4.0 supercharged swap will be far more complicated than a 4.2 swap.
However, if you are looking at replacing vehicles, yes, the 4.0 supercharged are somewehat more sturdy with more of the cooling system and intake made of aluminum rather than plastic.
This post will give you an idea of the 4.0 to 4.2 transplant...not trivial: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/g...k-4-2-a-23763/

Why don't you just buy and fit this:
JAGUAR XJ8/XK8/XKR/V8 S TYPE TOP TENSIONERS/CHAINS KIT | eBay
It'll probably solve all the noise problems at one go !

I'm going to give it a few more weeks to sell though, so I can buy a 4.2 S-Type if it does.
Cheers!
