Zippy,
Internal mechanical failure. We want to remove the transmission and take to a local specialist on a pallet for dis-assembly.
We have JTIS but unclear on lowering rear-of-transmission when still bolted to engine?? - This is the step to reach upper bell-housing bolts.
I will be raising vehicle 50cm off driveway.
Thanks.

My engine is the v-8 version that being said I removed rear trans mount and drive shaft, pulled down on trans tail to reach the upper bolts on bell housing. I never touched the motor mounts. I did drop exhaust from manifolds both sides .Removed cooler lines and electrical connections. my convertor has 8 nuts at flexplate to flywheel. The v-6 version only has 4. Would need 4 foot extension to get to the top trans bolts as well. Mine was stuck sorta from the pins on the bell housing not coming away from the engine. I just rocked it with some force and it came loose.

No where do I see remove engine mounts for your application. Only rear trans cross mount. Should be 4 bolts at outer edge of mount and one torx head at center of mount connecting it to the trans tail. Pull down on trans tail to get to upper bell housing bolts. Now when reinstalling you will have to kinda tilt the engine up slightly to get the trans back to the motor. I have done this twice takes under 2 hours the second time to remove.

Zippy,
Managed to remove all bell-housing bolts without having to lower transmission rear. We have a small 13mm socket drive + patience.
Starter motor off.
JTIS states 8 bell-housing bolts but we counted and removed 11 - very odd.
We cannot pull case off engine - how many dowels are there on 5R55N and is there a proper method of detaching the dowels?
I don't want to pull car off stands.
Thanks.

Should only be 2 pins on the bell housing. One left and one right. They will be 180 degrees across from each other. Mine were stuck pretty good and required a large flat bladed screw driver for prying and aggressive movement at the tail shaft to break them loose. Note pry tool can be used but be careful not to damage housing. These guide pins get stuck after they have set for this amount of time. Before I reinstalled I took emery cloth and sanded them to get the corrosion off of them which helped them to fit without having them bind when the case and the engine came back together. As far as the 11 bolts not sure per your app as mine had 16 bell housing bolts being the V-8 model. Should have been an even amount. Bottom of bell housing count bolts. Starting at left side count across so if you count 6 top side will have the same amount. I believe your housing has 12 bolts 6 top 6 bottom.Be sure to get them all out before trying to separate the case from the engine. Failure to get all bolts out will not allow housing to move and you may damage it trying to move. Take a small mirror with telescoping rod (you can get this from an auto parts store) and visually check each bolt hole to see if it has been removed. I think you will find there is still one bolt in the trans case bell housing somewhere up top right where you can not see it without the mirror.
