I had a progressivly worsening harsh 2-1 downshift because of leaking fluid, eventually leading to an audible clunk. I replaced pan and fluid, clunk is gone but the harsh 2-1 right before a complete stop is still there, would you recommend a software reflash to see if that may resolve it? And would it be free? I saw no TSB on that. THANKS!!

This data has come from our shop where we rebuild this type and several others types of valve bodies. We provide these valve bodies for local transmission shops, repair shops and some dealer techs who do side work.

I will try to get some photos of the valve bore wear that we see on these units as well. I will also get some scans uploaded of the solenoids being tested on our solenoid dyno.
I am just wondering I seem to have all the symptoms of a worn valve body on my 03 s type r. How much would you normally charge for this at your shop? Just so I can get a relative and comparative estimation on the cost here locally.

Could you post some symptoms so that we may review them and make sure it is a VB issue??

Sent you a PM regarding your other question

Please post your pictures. I would be very interested in them.

The early Ford transmission in our S Types can also suffer from bore wear in the case. There is an aftermarket repair for that as well. Seems to happen mainly on high mileage units.

My 03 str not only shifts harshly from 2-1 but vice versa as well. 1-2 is kind of a lurch effect, and when I use a heavy foot off a stop it kind of seems to almost slip or delay before harshly shifting into 2nd. downshifts aren't as they should be but not as noticeable as upshifts. I have had the restricted performance light up on the dash more than once and usually I turn the car off and leave it for a bit and it goes away. Ive read more than I'd like on the lurch and restricted performance threads but so far no luck. Does anyone have any advice?

From what you are describing a valve body replacement should cure your issues. I assume you have had the TCM reflash done already and that the symptoms still persist?

I have not tried to reflash the TCM, however with good reason. To my understanding only the dealer can do a proper reflash. To say the very least last time my low beam bulb went out my trip to the dealers was on the boarder of insanity, they told me $650 for a pair of d2s h1 bulbs which I bought online for 200 OEM. I'm very hesitant to take an issue as such to that same dealer.

Is a TCM reflash something your familiar with? Would it make sense to just walk in to the dreadful dealers and just say here is my car, give me the bill to nothing more and nothing less than a TCM reflash? or are there other things I would need done to accompany a reflash.

Some indy places can do a reflash but it's usually not very costly at a dealer.

Before any re-flashing. Have you serviced the transmission? Replaced the pan/filter and sleeve and new pan bolts? What fluid did you use when the work was done?

If not I would service it first to see how it goes. If the rebuilt valve body is not too expensive you could install that too to be double sure of fixing your problems. Kind of your call on that one. Replacing the valve body is a new thing and we are still learning about it.

Has anyone heard from Revmax in the past month? He sounds quite knowledgeable on our ZF boxes but was here on the forum for just a few days and then poof, he's gone. Did anyone ever speak or correspond with him?

My wife is having some intermittent 1-2 shifting issues with her 2006 XK8. Rick (joycesjag) and I changed the pan/filter, sleeve, and fluid this past Wednesday, the car was fine for about 400 miles, then began the intermittent 1-2 shifting issues again on Friday morning. From reading this post, I though perhaps Revmax could help....

All,

I know this is a fairly old thread, but maybe someone can help pin down what the source of the sound and behavior I have documented on video at
. No trouble code logged, just flare and kick downshifting. From what everyone has said here it seems it is a VB problem. Ideas, anyone? Otherwise its going up for sale so it can be SEP :/

I have an issue with my 04 XK8 convertible that is singular and I can't find a thread or post related specifically to it so here it is: My ZF 6hp26 is fine except it flares or slips on the 1-2 upshift. All other shifts are fine both up and down. I have the "squawk" as well so I am currently doing the whole banana service with the VB removal and am using real ZF parts with Mercon SP fluid hoping it will resolve both problems but I kinda doubt it. I am very gentle on this car but if I take off more aggressively from a stop, it shifts faster but still not crisp. Anyone taking bets on whether the service helps both issues?

Update: After doing the whole service using ZF parts and Mercon the ZF "squawk" is gone and it shifts a little better on the 1-2 but not that much. I' did have issues trying to determine the trans temp accurately with the temp gun. The temps as measured varied significantly from the pan to the side of the housing to the bell. I ultimately went with the pan reading as this seemed the least likely to be affected by radiant surface heat from the exhaust. I'll call the process a success though not celebratory.
