Default 6k str I found on craigslist

Just like the title says, I found someone selling their s type r for 6 grand... Too good of a deal for me to pass up and maybe someone else is looking for this great deal. I'm going to do a little bit more searching to figure out what I can find about the car, but just thought I would post it seeing as how cheap it is.

eh... not much to go by there in that ad, 136k miles on it too... yeesh... by the time you go look at it, you'll find it's not much of a deal at all.

I think decent examples of 03-04 str's can be found in the 8's now...

If it doesn't need any work and accident free it would be worth looking in to. Good find.

I would suggest to proceed very carefully... after all we're talking about Craigslist...

Actually had a quick look at EBay and saw an 06 STR with 65000 miles for around $14,500.00 IIRC looked in pretty good shape, just took a quick look though.

Could be the proverbial "acquired in a divorce settlement" situation. Look at the contact name in the ad.

I don't know why so many members here say our cars are worth less than $10k? I look for them all the time now and it's always in the mid-teens and even in upper-20s for totally equipped 08 models! Last October I got mine in the mid-teens and I think that was a pretty good price given the low mileage and the great condition of the car. It was still a few thousand dollars less, yet probably equally as enjoyable, as the AMG C55 I almost bought that shared similar mileage and condition. Yes, I did negotiate and yes I did shop around by looking at the only other two STRs in the South Florida area.

Stay away from that car. I can just about guarantee it will be a money pit...you can find one with 70,000 miles on it for 11-12,000 bucks. Thats only another $150/month on a payment. If you can't do that, then you can't afford this car to begin with.

Also, I don't think any 05+ is worth 10k unless it has as many miles as that thing does on it. My local dealer just sold an '06 with 25k miles on it for $23,000 to someone which surprised me. It was certified until 2014 too.

Because they go on sale for that cheap all the time...At those prices they don't remain for sale for very long...

If you want to ruin your day, bring your STR to a carmax and get a free no-obligation trade in quote...

"custom 19inch chrome rims" as well? I wouldn't go near it with a bargepole, personally!

That's 08 models with low mileage. 03-04's with higher mileage list at 10-14k. Then consider it's a special interest model, not many buyers are looking for 10 year old jag's with a thirsty supercharged v8. The car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, so all those STR's you see listed at 10k+, might have zero interest, so if you show up and haggle with a take it or leave it attitude, you can eventually find someone desperate enough to sell you their STR for under 10k.

The STR I just bought was originally listed at 11k. I scored it for 8k after extensive haggling. Even still, I regret not sticking closer to my opening offer of $7k, because I still think it was a bit of an impulse buy and I could have dragged the seller down into the 7k range in time as well.

Maybe just me, but that ad looks kind of sketchy. Poorly written, no pics, very little in the way of details. I'd certainly want a lot more info before I even considered taking a look at it.

You can find lower mile examples without too much effort, which I would recommend.

The pricing for STR's is all over the place. Seems to be worth what the buyer will pay in most cases.

Consider your anual maintenance / repair costs and the fact it has no warranty. A more expensive lower mileage is a better bet. If you are willing to do all the maintenance yourself then maybe. As sketchy as craigslist sounds, I have a great deal of sucessful transactions. I would add that a lack of photos means it is being poorly presented; which may mean they are desparate or the car has issues...
Just my 2 cents worth!

I just texted the guy to figure it out, and I found out it is a salvage title (not stated in the ad and took me a day to get him to tell me it's salvage) and he said he "fits it himself" meaning he FIXED it himself. If the guy can't spell, I don't think he can repair an str. I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming of swapping my x type for an str

It's really great to hear everyone's opinions on where to buy these cars and how much they are actually worth. That is why I love this forum!

It used to be if you owned a Jag, you had a lot of money in the bank, at least that was the thought. But as an owner we know the real deal. Anyone can afford to buy one. Its the luxury of being able to pay for the service of one when needed that sets the Jag owner apart and shows his true worth.

That said, I got to tell you my father in law gave my son his Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo for college as a gift. 2000 with 47,000 miles on it. I thought wow, thanks father in law for the great gift. Want to talk about a money pit.
That car has more issues then you can imagine. And because 4 wheel drive capabilities, you have twice the things to go wrong underneath. I could have bought the kid a used Jag by now and probably had less expense. So when someone wants to complain about the costs of maintaining the Jag, I can send them the receipts so far with the Jeep. What a nightmare car.

Yes, and my Impala cost $1200 to have the steering lock fixed after it jammed while I was at a Jaguar dealership looking at S-Types #hich is why I now have a Jag!

Three "ands" in one long disjointed sentence. A literary masterpiece you think?

If all STR's were only sold by attending the residence bearing a formal written invitation to inspect such vehicle, there would be many of us craning in vain at the beginning of the poplar-lined driveway hoping for just a glimpse of the elusive automobile.

Still, where would Jaguar be without pretentiousness?

I'm ready to buy another. I don't care who its previous owner was. If price and condition, combined with my efforts, and further spending give me the car I want, I'll be happy. Isn't it?
