Default ABS reluctor rings

Hi all

I have recently cured an issue on my ABS on a 2004 s-type 2.7D. The reluctor rings have corroded and swollen out of shape, but still working. Does any one know if these are magnetic rings with north/south pole segments ? Ideally I would like to treat these to stop the corrosion going any further, as replacement is time consuming and expensive. I am open to suggestions on the best products to use for this to stop the corrosion and also protect the surface from further rusting, without effecting the pickup of the ring by the sensors.

you can replace them with new ones for around £40

ABS Reluctor Rings - Jaguar cars

with it being a toothed ring id guess its not magnetic and say its a passive ring but not certain.

on a side note you might want to check out the uk forum as no diesel s types were sold in the us

Hi Police666

Yes I did see these. In fact there are a few people that do them. Here's another one.

ABS Reluctor Rings

I am struggling with time, so just need to keep it going until I have time to change them.

Thanks for the uk info. I never realised that the 2.7D was not sold in the US.

You learn something new every day.

Cheers Laurie

An online video on changing the reluctor rings shows that they are an "interference fit" on the drive shaft - and sometimes break due to pressure of corrosion.

The video shows a bow torch being used for circa 1 to 2 minutes around edge of ring - until colour changes from biscuit colour to blue - at which point the ring can be picked up with a pair of pliers and dropped on to the shaft (which should have been wire brushed clean - followed by emery cloth to ensure nice surface for new ring)

An aluminium or wooden drift may then be used to gently tap around the ring circumference to ensure it seats down properly on shaft.

No mention is made of the procedure to access the shaft - rears look more difficult than front
