Hi there, I own a 86 XJ-SC that I have just completed all possible mechanical maintenance to. From shocks, to wiring etc.. It has 139,000 kms on it. i
A guy that has a 2005 S type with 50,000 is willing to consider a trade.
Does this sound like a good deal to you? And what should I be wary of in considering the S type?

It depends. The S Type drives a whole lot better than the XJ but it is much newer so I would expect that.
Any reason you want an S Type? I read an article about the 5 top cars for depreciation and the S Type was in it but the only negative thing they could say was the there was nothing in particular bad about the S Type it just was not popular when new.
I have a 2005 STR and would vote for that but something tells me he wants to trade you a V-6 model. No problems there but carefully find out the current market value of the S Type because it won't be very high at this point in time!

Well to be honest, I just spent a shwack of money getting the XJS up to snuff and am apprehensive she's gonna keep doing it. Whereas, the S type, may be better in the long run for reliability. The S looks to be a V 6, no exceptional trim packages.. As a driver, I'd like to get 350-400 k out of the S. The XJS I'd be just driving it occassionally adding about 1500 k - 5000 k per yr.

Well... if you were going to drive it similarly then stick with an STR but for long distance you could have any engine I suppose. They all cruise forever, really well. Check your body and the seats are suited. Sport model S-Type has different seats so check each kind as you're going to notice over long distances.

Roland... I posted in your thread in the XJS forum. My honest opinion... the XJ-SC has the potential to be a collectible. My personal opinion is that it was a strange duck and a stop gap until the true convertible could be brought to market. That said, having a sorted one that is a pleasant day cruiser would be neat. So, you need to really look at what you want to do. If it was me, I would strive to find the money for a daily driver and retire the XJS. Just look around in the classifieds. You will be hard pressed to replace it. Then again, if it is just another car to you, then the trade may very well make sense. But again, a word of caution here as well. Your XJS has started a slow appreciation climb. They are all slowly going up in value. The S on the other hand is still dropping in value, and will for many more years. It will take a great many more years, and more cars dropping out for it to bottom out. Even then, the V8 and R cars will be the first to turn.
So, the real question is... Do you want to have a toy in your garage??
