Default Air Box Assembly

Hello Folks!!...
Yesterday I was replacing the air filter when I broke off part of the upper air box (lid) where the right hand side (lower air box) tab goes through the upper (slot). Unfortunately it took a circular piece with it . So the hole is above the filter which negates the air filter, and after checking the parts stores (Jaguar) I have to buy the whole assembly. The lowest I could find was from JPLV for about 350 piasters . I noticed a little addy on the web page about K&N, went to the site (Mina) and they have the air intake kit for about 150.00. It includes bands, pipe, brackit and filter. Has anyone out there used this? Is there another alternative or brand? For now I have a double piece of duct tape over the little hole and is doing well, but I would like to fix it... and perhaps do a little "mod" with it.

Thanks folks
Drive On!!...

Fast Freddie

If you buy the mina one you will lose power. It will suck in the hot air from the engine compartment and will not actually be a performance gain. You would be better off if you like the performance of the STR to get the stock box. It sucks but depends on what you are going after. I would keep your eyes peeled for a parts car but there is another guy that actually has a mina style intake that is trying to go back to stock that has been looking for one for a while. So good luck might have to suck up the 350 and consider it a lesson learned. Also I believe the mina intake doesnt include the elbow, I think it uses the stock elbow someone correct me if I'm wrong but I remember reading that somewhere that its pretty much a replacement for the box.

neither of them have the parts.... I called already because I need one too. Are there any aftermarket solutions? I know with Spectre performance they stock some generic pieces that isolate the air filter from the engine compartment air.

If you have the pieces you can weld them back together. Yes you can weld plastics. Small butane lighter and plastic weld rods from your local handyman store. Practice on your kids broken toys before your broken toy. lol

Edit: Even if you don't have all the pieces you can rob little bits from toys no longer used and not missed... (bathroom trash cans are almost puuuurrfict.

X2 if you have the pieces. I do it all the time with a soldering iron. Actually, i bought a kit off Amazon for about 160 but haven't tried it yet. Another alternative is Fusor plastic adhesive. But you need the adhesion promoter and the special gun. Have any friends with a bodyshop??

The air box is prone to breakage when removing. What I do now is remove the entire fresh air intake system. Loosen clamp on intake tube, unplug the MAF, remove one bolt that holds down the air box, unplug the wire for the fresh air inlet door, remove the screw holding the fresh air snorkel, remove PCV tube running to valve cover. I can then pull everything straight up and out.

Before I really struggled to get to the air filter. Those two tabs just don't give you enough room to get the top of the air box off.

Remove your airbox and do this and it will make it alot easier to deal with and help lessen the chance of breaking it.

Good idea! Then you can actually get the top off and on without breakage.

Great Job Vance! I don't know about the V-8's/R's, but on the 3.0L, even with intake hose removed, the snout on the top cover hits structure before you achieve the angle required to engage the inboard locking tabs. For me, that's why I always just remove the whole box before trying to open it or close it. May do your mod next time, though, in case my girls one day turn to another for service.
Yes...you can force and tweak things to get the two pcs together with the lower box mounted and secured.....but then one day it'll be really humid, sweat running into your eyes, and flys/yellow jackets buzzing about and your hands, slick from grease and sweat, will slip..and you'll come in, clean up, and join the growing ranks of those looking for a cheap solution online to replace the broken air box........
