Air filter size confusion

Air filter size confusion
Hey Guys,
So i recently had the little turret on the radiator house break off and while replacing it i took a look at the air filter and it was quite dirty(even though i replaced it less than 10k ago--gotta love California). So i ordered a replacement online(mann c3270) and this thing is like 1-1.5 inches too long! I recall last time i replaced it i had this problem as well: i went to autozone and purchased the fram extragaurd filter which was too long as well. They replaced it with a normal fram filter and it was only a bit longer so i shoved it in there and called it a day. Anyways I used the search but was unable to find a thread with specific part numbers so anyone mind sharing what kind of air filter they have and how it fits? Id greatly appreciate it. Also i know a K&N fits great but with so many mixed reviews i just don't wanna do it for the time being. Thanks in advance guys,Anton

K&N verses stock
Dealer told me you have to tweak or change out the mass air sensor to use the K&N.
I can see the computer trying to adjust to the increased air flow and kicking out an error, but have not actually tested it.
Any 4.2L owners with experience insight?
As far as wrong size, how can that be? Sounds like a simple wrong part number vs model/engine to me or bad parts guy.

I ended up buying one from the dealer. It was only 8 more bucks than what I paid for the other one.
I am sure there are others that will probably fit properly but I was too lazy to fight over just $8...

My 2 cents !!!
Had confusion in this area for my 2004 STR. I previuosly owned a 2000 4.2 S-Type so I know about these two taking different sizes.
My STR uses Purolator A24866=
11 3/4 x 6 3/4"
My nonR used PurolatorA25301=
12 1/4 x6 1/2"
Measurements were at the gaskets.
I hope this helps. here's a link that matches my experience:

When I first got my 2003 S-Type I couldn't find an air filter locally that would fit so I wound up with a K&N. That's been 80,000 miles ago and all is well. The K&N has caused no problems with the MAF or any other sensor. I've run K&N filters on motorcycles for 20 years as well without any problems. It's a lot better than having a paper filter that doesn't fit correctly!!
