Exactly. You're hearing those pesky servo motors as they "hunt" for the correct position. There are a number of threads here on the forum for various ways to go about solving your problem. Search using "servo motor problem" as your key phrase and you should find yourself with plenty of reading to do....

(TSB00066, dated May 14, 2010)
--------------------------------------
A ticking or bubbling noise may be heard coming from behind the fascia / instrument panel when using the climate control system. The noise may be the result of one or more of the climate control blend door actuators giving incorrect position feedback to the climate control module, causing the blend doors to continually search for their correct position and causing the noise.
Action: Replace all four blend door actuators (about $16 each). Jag's time: 0.8 hours.
Parts:
XR8 57885 ..........Defrost vent / register blend door actuator Qty: 1
XR8 57886 ..........Footwell vent / duct blend door actuator Qty: 1
XR8 57887 ..........Instrument panel blend door actuator Qty: 1
XR8 57888 ..........Recirculation blend door actuator Qty: 1
Depends on what model of S-type, I guess, but from the above the cost would be around $200 excluding motor.

The bulletin says affected VIN range is N53000 - N91200 (2006 - 2008), but I had the same problem with my 2005 STR.

Thanks for the part numbers and it looks like the motor is included with each actuator.
One last puzzle is Jaguar lists .8 hours to change all 4? In older cars changing even one actuator is usually hours and hours because the dash has to be removed. Especially when changing the defroster one.
Could Jaguar actually have made it easy to swap these out?
Still looking for a DIY guy who has done this repair and can walk me thru it.

Can you comment on the difficulty of replacing the motors? The TSB you linked showed the process for one of the four. Thanks.

Edit - after re-reading the TSB, it does look like the estimate might refer only to the instrument panel blend actuator door.

On my 2005 STR I started getting a low tap, tap type noise from behind the dash. Only happens after the car is driven a while and the climate control slows down as the passenger compartment temperatures come under control. Very low in volume and I have to turn the radio off to hear it.
I followed the noise and it's in the passenger foot well area. This matched well with the description above of the blend doors hunting for the proper position. The actuator is not too expensive at about $50. Jaguar made it dead easy to change too! Just remove the glove box and you are looking at the actuator. 2 screws and uplug the electrical plug and it's out.
I got part number XR8 57888 as posted above (all marked with Ford part numbers too) and it is the correct part but it was assembled wrong and the actuator arm is about 100 degrees out of alignment. I can get another actuator and I am currently returning the one I have.

But the weird part is I put the old one back in and it's been a week or so and no noise of any kind!!
Could removing and reinstalling the actuator somehow reset it's position? I did cycle the power with the actuator hanging free so I could watch what it does when it's not hooked up to a blend door with the steel rod.
