Alternator problem
Hi. All,
I have had a Charging problem with my 2002/3 stype 3.0 auto petrol, cam on this forum last year and had help from others, but unfortunately did not cure the fault have changed alternator by buying used ones from scrapyard making sure numbers are identical, but still had same problem of charging stopping after 12 minutes of driving, and occasionally battery light on dash, battery was discharging to flat if car not used within 3 days ,just bought another battery have 3 spare now , thinking maybe a bad batch, I found a you tube guy talking about alternators and how they work and what to check, he was so informative, I immediately went out to my car and did all the tests and hey presto, I believe he has cracked my problem after 3 years of searching, It was when I puts my tester on the engine and then to the sub frame it was showing high readings instead of zero. What this told me was a bad earth, I immediately jacked car up and checked to find where was the earth strap from engine to chassis, there wasn’t one, I have had steering rods etc fitted about the time problems started and me thinks an apprentice may of took it off when working on car and not replaced it, I had new battery cable left over and put a connection to the bell housing and to the subframe and hey presto everything is sorted , there is no reading when probing engine and the charging has gone from 13.2 to 15.6 and it still charging after 20 mins of driving, I hope this may help someone who maybe having same or similar problem.
