Not a good situation!

The said they would try to drop it down to fix it but it would take 4-5 hours labor OuCH! If they couldn't fix it I would need to put a used gas tank on it...I guess it could be worse. Has anybody else had this issue and/or fixed it?

Fuel tank leaks on 2001 4.0 are almost unknown so no not common.

VVT needs oil so you may as well ignore the codes now you know it was out of oil. Pray no serious damage has been done. Seized engine would not be uncommon.

Your engine has little in common with the 3.0 whose details have been posted..

Do I understand correctly that TWO shops missed this very basic problem while diagnosing your car? If so, it's time to find another shop.

As far as the fuel tank issue, aren't all the connections and seals right on top, and easily accessed by removing the lower cushion of the back seat? Working from memory here, no access to my manuals at the moment. I didn't think there was any need to ever drop the tank unless it had structural damage.

Yes get access from the top. We are lucky that Jaguar gave us these access ports as they are bunch easier than dropping the tank.

BUT be aware that the top big round connections are easy to damage and call for as special tool to remove them. You most likely have a seal leak in the top cover. The covers have cracked before too. I just hope the shop won't cause more damage to the delicate plastic caps and seals.

Do you get any gas smell?

If you are interested a forum member has made a home made tool out of a large diameter plastic pipe. He cut slits up the sides to match the fins on the plastic caps. Others have used a hammer and a punch (Carefully!) to tap the cover and unscrew it.

Here is a picture of the fuel tank access ports. It's a Lincoln LS but the cars are the same under the skin.

Default Oil light on or flickering

I had a 98 xj8 that had the oil light come on and i dropped the oil pan go check out the siphon tube.
There is a spacer with o rings on both sides. If there isnt a tight seal they suck air.I put some blue rtv on
Both sides put it together no more oil light. Made me wonder how many jag owners got stiffed for a new oil pump.
