Default Any S-Type Owners Have JTIS Running on Windows 10 ?

This weekend we replaced our dying desktop running Windows 7 with a new much more powerful desktop that came with Windows 10. As I feared, I cannot get my JTIS CD to successfully install on it. Neither could Microsoft tech support....

Does anyone have JTIS running on Windows 10? If so, how did you do it?

Nope.

My "IT savvy" son has tried, no go.

He is trying to get me a working W7 laptop just for JTIS, Duh.

Not holding my breath either way.

I recently replaced an old XP computer with a new SSD (solid state drive) model and Windows 10. Like you, I found some old programs just will not run under Win 10.

My tech found software called VMWare Workstation which runs under Windows 10, and cost $250. VMWare can create an area in the SSD into which the full version of XP can be loaded and run, at the same time as Win 10 is running. No extra cost, as I already have an XP license. The tech also set up a separate VMWare workstation with Windows 7.

So, turn on PC and up comes Windows 10. Click on the VMWare icon and start up XP (I use a separate screen). I can also do the same for Windows 7.

A bit pricey for just JTIS, but knowledge is power - pic below shows layout.

I tried and failed a while ago... Ended up buying an old ruggedized laptop already with the right version of Windows Vista running. Easiest way!!

yep and it works fine.

You have to install the virtual machine from windows, mount an xp image then install the jtis cd, works perfectly

method here

How to add an XP Mode Virtual Machine to Windows 10 (or 8) using Hyper-V

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks....

As much as I dislike having to keep duplicate hardware/software in my home office, I think the easiest solution to my dilemma with this new Windows 10 desktop is to source a cheap, used laptop running Windows 7 or earlier and dedicate it to nothing but JTIS. I don't even need it to connect to the internet....

Now, any suggestions on the best websites to look for an old used laptop that is both cheap and relatively trustworthy?

Ebay is full of used laptops and desktops with earlier processors for sale (even Craigslist).

Note - running an old, unsupported OS means you get no IT support, and you may not be aware of any loaded malicious software; therefore, do NOT load anything personal on it - other than the JTIS - making it a dedicated platform.

Just was wondering if any development could take place to port these over to Tablet format (iPad iOS, Android OS, even Kindle).

Default An in-car JTIS platform?

It has been ages since I have posted here among so many friends, but could not resist this very important thread.

A while back "el cheapo" bare and basic Win tablets were offered by major retailers in Australia in 7" format - perfect for glovebox and dirt cheap as Microsoft offered its OS to OEMs free of cost (perhaps they saw Armageddon for MS in the all-out Apple vs Android battle).

I grabbed one immediately - as much to take advantage of the cigarette lighter / USB power charging as to tinker. Brilliant! Alas, now the new must-have "phablets", whether Apple or Android, have all but killed off the Win technology for phones and tablets, arguably the sole future for consumer computers, so my solution is now almost impossible to replicate.

My platform, as above, is based on the Mongoose OBDII hardware and software including JTIS/IDS/SDS - less than $100 on the 'bay - to which I added all my Jaguar docos relevant to each of my models and MY variants - all loaded onto a 32Gb micro SD in the tablet.

Only downside thus far, is which Jag glovebox do I keep it in? That's right, the hardware to replicate it has gone and despite many months of trolling that huge 'bay in the sky, never seems to come up for sale (or resale). It fits the purpose brilliantly - but is now orphaned.

In the meantime, my new Samsung Galaxy phablet is astonishing in its features (not least of which is the 249 page User Manual). If only I had access to some 9yo child to write the necessary Android app for Jaguar enthusiasts. I would gladly pay my $1.99 - honestly, I would!!!

On the other hand, if you must go the "big brick" route of a laptop, then expect to pay a whopping $40-50 for a good, workable XP based unit with a perfect screen. Disable any FDD or card slots, and I do like the idea of fitting a new HDD - my preference being the Toshiba Hybrid Drive - 1Tb of combined solid state and traditional hard drive (SSD+HDD) - and they are now as cheap as chips! Be warned though . . . you will need the final XP iteration to access such a huge capacity HDD and full USB functionality. I strongly endorse the comment to keep it dedicated to this use and no other. Indeed, the Mongoose software precludes any use of the internet.

Further, despite public belief to the contrary, Win XP is very much alive and well. It is no longer supported by MS, but most of the tried and tested mission critical technology in medicine, diagnostic imaging etc is still built over XP or Linux platforms. Check out your local computer techs and be prepared to buy - I bought 6 sealed copies of WinXP Pro (the blue fella) at a Saturday market only a few months ago.

I hope this helps - at least for the next 6 weeks until the next wave of technical evolution makes advice like this totally irrelevant!

Thanks for your input. My elderly mother has been in the hospital this past week with serious heart and lung problems so my attempts at figuring out how I can access JTIS again will have to wait for better days....

Agreed - XP was and still is the most stable version of Windows. What's more, it may be possible to get support till 2019. See here:

Forbes Welcome

I think Microsoft has adopted a death wish by forcing automatic updates of Windows 10 on unsuspecting and/or unwilling users. I will keep using XP for some time yet (see post #4) but I have been advised to:
(a) Use only the last version with all updates,
(b) Browse with Google Chrome instead of Internet Explorer,
(c) Discontinue use of (or uninstall) Java,
(d) Use good-quality anti-virus software,
(e) Setup initial log-on with a password.

In a way, I see my STR in the same light as Windows XP. Discontinued but still very good.

What about just using the PDF versions of JTIS?

I'm sure you can read a PDF on just about anything.

Now, for IDS/SDD:

I bought a 16GB usb stick for $15, installed Windows 7 32 bit and IDS/SDD
on it. I keep it in the pouch with the mongrelgoose cable. It should boot
from any reasonable random computer you can lay your hands on while
on the road. Better if you boot using the computer that you installed
with to avoid licensing problems unless you use Windows2go from
Windows 7 Enterprise or Windows 7 embedded. Windows 7 embedded
has a read only drive mode so that once it is installed, no further
writing is possible on the disk device(usb stick). Keeps JTIS from
invalidating itself.

I also have my original install on a HP Slate 2 tablet, the one with
the bulging, dead, unreplaceable battery

Hello,

It works fine on Windows 10, i have no issue with it.
trick is to get the 32bits DAO350.dll that works for windows10.
Just found it on the web somewhere.
Ignore Error messages during install, saying it did not install OK, but it did.
Regards,
Peter jan

jaguar38s,

Can you pinpoint exactly where you found that DAO350.dll program that works on Windows 10?
