Default Anyone with a Carfax account - looking to buy

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me out here, I'm looking to buy a 2003 S Type R; VIN #SAJEA03V931M56735

The dealer does not have a carfax available.

I used to own a 2003 S Type R with 99k miles, the trans had been rebuilt at 80k.

Appreciate your help.

I do not have a Carfax account, but I was able to get these service records for you. Also, I really do not trust Carfax 100%. I have seen cars which Carfax reported as clean, no accident cars as accident cars. It is best to inspect the car yourself or take it into a shop to give it a look.

Please note that not all service stations report to Carfax so this might not be a complete list of services done to the car:

Sal - Much appreciated. I'm curious about the number of owners and reported accidents; like you I don't trust Carfax 100% but it's a good starting point. I've seen cars with no accident history in the carfax and under inspection have been repaired. Same with the number of owners. This is a great start though, so thank you!

Sal - This is great info. Were the service records publicly available through an online source? If so, can you share the URL with us, please?
Thanks,

Carfax made a site where car owners can keep track of their maintenance schedules. It's free of charge. Go to https://www.mycarfax.com/ and then enter the VIN number of the car. It only mentions reported maintenance events.

Sal et al.

Okay here is the situation 2003 with 88k miles with the history that you pulled, 2 owner car for $8995 OR a 2004 with 43k miles 2 owner car for $13K pristine condition (regularly serviced at Galpin Jaguar in SoCal). Both are CA cars.

What would you choose?

I am no expert, but here's my opinion:

The 2004 has low mileage, but the $13k seems a bit high for it. The 2003 seems more fairly priced to me. See if they will knock off $2k or so off the 2004.

Also, check to see what type of maintenance was done. I am not too familiar with the R's, but check to see if the more costly maintenance have been completed already (ie: ZF transmission fluid change).

I always get higher mileage cars now as they like being driven and the price drops rapidly.

Thanks, Sal! Turns out my '03 S-Type, which I bought in March, was in the CF database!

What would you choose?

Based on an estimated 200,000 total lifetime miles, mathematically either car would cost roughly the same in terms of Cost Per Remaining Mile and Remaining Miles Per Dollar of Cost...

* 2004 STR (43K miles @ $13,000) has remaining life of 157K miles; so its Cost Per Remaining Mile = $0.08 per mile, and its Remaining Miles Per Dollar = 12.08 miles

* 2003 STR (88K miles @ $9,000) has remaining life of 112K miles; so its Cost Per Remaining Mile = $0.08 per mile, and its Remaining Miles Per Dollar = 12.44 miles (slightly BETTER than the '04)

In comparison, my 2003 3.0 purchased March 2013...
* 2003 3.0 (80K @ $6,000) has remaining life of 120K miles; so its Cost Per Remaining Mile = $0.05 per mile, and its Remaining Miles Per Dollar = 20.00 miles (MUCH BETTER than either above)

Obviously, there are other factors to consider (e.g. the lower mileage car may be in better condition than the higher mileage '03). And the 200K estimated lifetime mileage is completely arbitrary, but overall this gives you a rather objective place to start your comparison.

NOTE:
"Cost Per Remaining Mile" = Purchase Price / Miles Remaining - LOWER IS BETTER
"Remaining Miles Per Dollar (of Price) = Miles Remaining / Purchase Price - HIGHER IS BETTER
Also, if the remaining mileage is less than 200K, the '04 becomes the clear better choice mathematically.

Interesting. Over here it's probably more use to pick an estimated max cost-effective age, say 15 years. That makes the 03 the clear winner as buying one more year for $4K isn't worth it. (Even 15 is optimistic many times.)

True.

I put a huge amount of miles on my cars and I try to squeeze every mile out of them before replacing them. So estimating it's remaining life in miles is a more realistic way of estimating it's cost for me. It's just my personal rule of thumb.

My last car ('96 Toyota Avalon) was 16 yrs old and had 230,000 miles when I finally replaced it with the Jag. It still ran like a top too.
