I bought a 2004 S Type Sport Diesel (40,000 mls) 4 weeks ago, yesterday the gear box packed up ,the mechanic said that the oil cooler was faulty and let water into the gearbox . According to him it's a known fault and that Jaguar did a recall for the problem.
I just rang the last owner he said that he got not word on a recall, so I just wondered if anybody knows anything about it ?

No idea about the states and their warranty. My problem at the min is that the Garage I bought off was not a main dealer ,and it turns out that he had fitted a new box to the car a week before I bought it (never told me ) without fitting a new cooler ( he was not aware of the prob with the coolers) hence the new box packed up. Because he fitted the box Jaguar don't want to know, and he won't repair it because he maintains that the new box went because of a defect know to Jaguar. Had he been advised of the cooler problem he would have replaced it as well. So I am now carless and need to pay €6000 to get my car fixed . NO MORE JAGUARS FOR ME EVER

Motivated
Don't be too harsh on the vehicle (Jaguar).
Any, and I mean any auto trans will self destuct if A/F finds it's way into the fluid. It delaminates the clutch plates/adhesive.
Any mechanic worth his salt checks for this condition when looking for the reason for original failure, even down to analysing the fluid at teardown. I would blame the shop that changed it for less than diligent behaviour. Owning a shop I always have to be vigilent that my mechanics will do the job right...It's called supervison, and I promote those that demonstrate the ability to work without that supervison.
Best of luck with your new ride

Well guys I doubt it's the USA since we don't have any diesels *( Jag diesels that is) on this side--besides Motivated mentioned 6000 Euros so I presume he is on the Conti--nent!
Being originally from the UK and the Brit Motor Industry I can see where there could be some remedies if he were in the UK, basically the same as the US (except more so ) due to the litigious propensities that exist.
In the end though it really is Caveat Emptor--Buyer beware!
Unfortunate story.

Yeah, you're right there Norri, many folk just don't fill in their location in their profile - leaving us guessing, that's why I said 'your country' in my second post, but the advice is the same, the fact he replaced the 'box means he knew there was a problem, it's his fault he didn't rectify correctly and I'd think most countries have relevant consumer laws.

This is more often covered on www.jaguarfoum.co.uk as diesel jags were never sold into USA/Canada
I don't believe it was a RECALL as though very serious it's not the thing for that but it was a Service Action e.g. 307-K018v2 where it goes by various terms such as Customer Satisfaction Programme
